We Remember

BARANY, Martin

April 24, 1924 — January 31, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Martin Barany. He left us on January 31 at Kelowna General Hospital, surrounded by his immediate family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Gillian Barany (Taylor), his son Alex, and brother Tom, and he is survived by his sister Renate, son Roger, daughter-in-law Sandra Ayala, grandchildren Aaron, Emmanuel, and Chantal and nieces Carol Newman, Pam Selby, Sue Zimmerman and nephew Michael Barany and relatives living in Canada and abroad.

Martin was born in Vienna, Austria. During WWII, his family sought asylum in Manchester, England, where he graduated as a Chemical Engineer. Martin left England to pursue his Master’s Degree at MIT in the United States, and later found employment in Montreal, Canada, where he met his first wife and had two sons. Martin later met Gill, the light of his life, and together they left Montreal to live in Ottawa for 15 years. After retirement, their love for swimming, sailing, and skiing brought them to Kelowna, which became their new home.

He passionately enjoyed classical music, opera, the arts, gardening, travel, gourmet cooking and fine wine.

His independence and strength of character made us stronger and during this time we are celebrating his passionate and adventurous life.
