We Remember

BARNES, Albert

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

On November 19th, 2012 at the age of 95, with his family by his side, Bert rode off into the sunset to join his beloved wife Vera. Born on September 22, 1917 in Merritt, B.C., he was raised in the coal mining town of Blakeburn and also in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. At 16, he went to work for his dad’s logging company as a logging truck driver. In 1940 with the shutdown of Blakeburn, the family business was moved to Keremeos, where in 1941, Bert met local school teacher, Vera Schoening, who was to become the love of his life. They were married on February 26th, 1944. In 1949, Bert, Vera and their two children Wayne, and Anne moved to a farm in the Enderby area. This was to become the family home for the next 42 years. There another daughter, Roxy, was born. Bert and Vera enjoyed living in the Shuswap/Okanagan area, where she taught school for many years and Bert had a variety of jobs including; school bus driver, Driver’s Training instructor and logger. The couple joined many community activities over the years.

Bert was very active in local sports, playing baseball in the 1950’s and early 60’s. He went on to coach in the Minor Hockey league in Enderby. In the summertime, you could find him at the baseball field cheering (razzing) the Enderby Legionaires. His love for all sports carried on throughout his life and many family holiday dinners were consumed while watching a game on the television. hockey, baseball, and boxing were his favourites.

Bert was predeceased by his loving wife Vera in 1990, his son Wayne in 2004, his grandson Jared in 2005, and his daughter-in-law Brenda in 2008. Left to blaze the trail and cherish his memory are his daughter Anne, Kelowna; daughter Roxy, Lac La Hache; grandson Dustin (Nikki) Bigney, West Vancouver; granddaughter Dawn (Jeff) Prowal, Kelowna; grandson Shane (Maria) Barnes, Prince George; and granddaughter Rachelle (Tim) Garvin, Prince George. His great grandchildren, Becky and Reanna Barnes, Taylor and James Garvin, and Ciera and Jetta Prowal will miss their Great Granddad. He also leaves his sister-in-law Liz Schoening and many nieces and nephews. Also left to cherish his memory is his very special care aid Sophie MacLeod.

Another great passion of Bert’s was horses. Dad often said the only reason Mum agreed to go out on a first date with him was because she wanted to ride his horses. Horses played a large role in family life and weekends were filled with gymkhanas. His children and grandchildren grew up on the farm and to his grandchildren, he will always remain “King of the Cowboys.” We will miss his sense of humour, his yodelling, his love of movies, and above all, the love and guidance he has shown all of us. We love you, Dad.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Ron Schriemer and his receptionist, Carol, for taking such good care of “Uncle Bert” for the past 12 years. We would also like to thank the Palliative Home Care nurses: Angela, Leslie, Jody, Rosanne, and Janet, as well as the wonderful staff at the Central Okanagan Hospice House in Kelowna.

A celebration of life for family and close friends will be held in the spring of 2013. In lieu of flowers, donation in Bert’s memory may be made to Children’s Hospital, 938, 28th Ave W., Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 4H4. Online donations can be made at www.bcchf.ca.

    Dearest Anne and family–
“Grand-dad” was a character that couldn’t hide that glint in his eye! I am glad that he is now at peace and without pain. May memories of the love and support that you received from both your parents be a comfort to you.
