We Remember
BARNES, Gloria Claire
April 24, 1939 — March 21, 2025
It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria Claire Barnes, who went to be with the Lord on March 21, 2025, at the age of 85.
Gloria now goes to join and is reunited with those who passed before her, including her husband Al; parents Clarence and Ruth Longhurst; and siblings Joan, Pat, Tom, and Lyn.
She will be forever loved and missed by her sister Maureen, as well as her extended family members.
Gloria was born on April 24, 1939, in Ontario, where she grew up surrounded by family, adventure, and a deep love for animals. She trained at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London and dedicated her career to caring for others at St. Joe’s, where she made a lasting impact. Upon retirement, she followed her brother Tom to British Columbia, eager to be closer to family and embrace a new chapter in life. Always fiercely independent, she made the transition on her own terms, bringing with her the same determination and passion that defined her life.
A true dog lover and skilled trainer, Gloria had a special place in her heart for Labradors and miniature poodles. Hunting was a cherished family tradition, and she spent many memorable days in the field with her father, brothers, and loved ones—her loyal black lab always by her side during fox hunts. Family gatherings were the foundation of her life, and she treasured time spent with loved ones, whether it was with her grandparents or at the big Christmas and New Year’s dinners that brought everyone together.
Outside of family and dogs, Gloria had another great love—Corvettes. She owned several over the years, and absolutely adored driving them. Even as she got older, her adventurous and independent light never dimmed. She had an electric scooter that she could drive onto her car using a hitch and would bring it around with her, ensuring she could always get out and explore on her own terms. Gloria’s vibrant spirit, warmth, and unwavering love for her family will be missed beyond words.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date in honour of Gloria.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Kelowna SPCA or the MS Society of Canada, two causes that were near and dear to Gloria’s heart.
