We Remember

BARTOLILLO, Domenico “Dom”

March 8, 1951 — January 26, 2023

On Thursday, January 26th, 2023, Domenico Bartolillo was called home, at the age of 71 after a heroic battle with cancer. After 3 years and 8.5 long months in hospital, Domenico died peacefully with his beloved wife, Sue, and their children by his side. The world has lost the most incredible son, brother, husband, father, Nonno and friend.

If you asked a hundred people who Domenico Bartolillo was, they’d all give you the same answer…  He was a remarkable man who always had a smile on his face and kindness in his eyes. If you knew him, you loved him.

Domenico was born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy on March 8, 1951, to father Francesco Bartolillo and mother Rosina Alessio. The eldest son of four children, Domenico didn’t have the opportunity for much formal education. After his father fell ill, he became the head of the household and worked any odd jobs he could find in the olive orchards, as a bricklayer, a plaster, a stonemason and carpentry apprentice. His work ethic and desire to take care of his family led to him to immigrate to Canada in 1968. Just 18 years old, he arrived without a word of English to family he had never met, but nonetheless, he found his way and his one true love.

Sue and Domenico were married in May 1973. Their love story is legendary, one that their children, nieces, nephews, siblings, in-laws and friends aspire and look up to. They welcomed son Frank in 76, daughter Lia in 79 and their most favourite mistake Antonella in 1985. His children were his pride and joy, and he cherished his family above all else. Domenico was also an avid outdoors man. His love of fishing, hunting, camping and gardening kept him busy and filled his life and heart full of memories his family and friends will always cherish.

Domenico’s work ethic was but one of his strengths…  He never shied away from hard work and spent over 50 years in concrete finishing and contracting. He was a true artist in his craft and was known for his keen eye and level hand.

Domenico was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; and brother-in-law, Mario Secreti. He is survived by his wife Sue; children Frank (Brenda) Bartolillo, Lia (David) Bartolillo and Lei (Jayson) Bartolillo; grandchildren Viena Rose, Luca Domenico and Stella Dominique Bartolillo; siblings Anna Secreti, Filomena (Francesco) Lammirato and Andrea (Carol) Bartolillo; and many extended family members.

A Celebration of Life is planned for SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2023, at 1:00 PM, at the SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME on 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. All are invited to attend. A reception will follow immediately after, at 2:00 pm.

  • Jennifer Park says:

Sue and Lia, my heart breaks for the both of you and your family. I heard about Dom the other day at work and was just devastated. He fought so hard and had such an amazing fight in him even thru all the obstacles that were thrown at him during his hospital stay. Hearing him talk about his kids, grandkids and your family suppers together just showed how much he truly cared and loved you all. The family support he had just proves what a wonderful man he was and how much you all cherished him. I definitely cried a couple times over the last months we spent together and the fact he always was trying to calm and reassure everyone around him was truly a great example of how much he cared. I am sending you all love, hugs and healing vibes as I know it’s going to be hard but you have each other to lean on. I unfortunately will not be able to make it, I am working on the 4th, but please know I wish you all the best. All of us on 3 west send our sympathies. Love Jen
