We Remember
BATEMAN, Judith Lenore Perry
—
Judith Lenore Perry Bateman was born in Ynysddu, Wales on May 11, 1937. She spoke of evacuating from the city of Cardiff during World War II, and of living at Rose Cottage. While the cottage was in the middle of beautiful green rolling Welsh hills, they had to carry their water a mile or two, and living was hard work. She remembered receiving a cup of milk at school every day.
She moved with her family to Canada at age 10, on a rough sea voyage to Halifax and a long train ride to Calgary. She was the oldest of 7 children. She was 2 years old when the triplets were born (Christine, Keith and Leigh). When the triplets were 4 years old, the twins were born (Carol and Meryl). The youngest sister, Patti, was born a few months after arriving in Canada.
The family lived in Calgary for a few years then moved to Edmonton. In 1956, age 19, she traveled to Cardston, Alberta, with church and family friends, Glen and Kay Bateman. While in Cardston, she met their son, Larry, who invited her to a dance in Waterton. She loved to dance.
After returning from travels with her Auntie Peg to Britain and Spain, she visited Larry again, this time in beautiful Banff where he was working.
They dated for a year before Larry served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They married soon after his return in August of 1959. She had grown up being called Lenore, but Larry called her Lennie and the name stuck. Later, her children and grandchildren called her Gram.
She raised a wonderful family of seven children in Edmonton from 1960 to 1981 when they moved to the Kelowna area.
She learned great domestic skills and was a hard worker. She enjoyed feeding people and was a great cook, well known for her roast beef and gravy, crepes, cheesini, and taco salad. Her artistic talents were expressed in singing and directing music, flower arranging, water colour painting, classy décor and clothing style. She loved music and had many opportunities to sing in choirs and direct church choirs.
Lennie had a great testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and his gospel. She has served in numerous church callings in Primary, Young Women, Relief Society, Stake and Ward Music and with LDS social services. She prayed daily and devoted herself to gospel study. She was a righteous influence to her posterity. She was a generous, kind and loving person who befriended many.
Travel was something she really enjoyed and she was blessed to travel many places: England, Wales, Spain, France, Italy, China, Thailand, Hawaii, USA, Canada, Mediterranean, Israel, and Egypt. In her later years, she took groups of her grandchildren on cruises or to Disneyworld.
She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother! She loved her family and has left a rich legacy of love. It was a tragedy when Larry passed away in September 2002. Gram was courageous in serving a 2 year mission at the LDS Church Family History Library in Salt Lake City in 2008 to 2010. While there, breast cancer was diagnosed for the third time in her life. She proceeded with surgery and treatment, although doctors did find her cancer had metastasized to her ribs. She completed her mission and returned home. She had several years of good health but the cancer spread to her spine. She responded to treatment until February, 2016 when the doctors said that nothing more could be done.
She lived an amazing life of love and service before she passed away peacefully May 28, 2016 in Kelowna surrounded by family. She is survived by her children: Danny (Donna), Suzi (Kelly), Tami (Gordon), Barb (Miles), Ben (Dena), Cari (Dennis) and Joey (Chris), 25 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Lennie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Larry; her parents Burt and Muriel Perry; her sister Meryl; her brother Leigh; and her granddaughter Becky.
Viewing will be held Friday, June 3 at 12:00 noon, and funeral service at 1:00 pm, both at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 696 Glenmore Road, Kelowna, BC.
The family extends thanks to the health care professionals who cared for her, as well as her many family and friends for all their love and support. If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

What a beautiful testimony to your mom Joey. Truly told the wonderful story of her life. We are sorry for your loss. Sending love to you and your family.
My condolences to the family. Lennie was 6 months older than me & I really grew up with the triplets @ Scona & @ the Whyte Avenue chapel. The twins I got to know after my mission & helas I never really knew Pattie BUT The parents were good to me. Larry sponsored me in New York Life but I stuck to teaching. The Perrys were part of my extended family. I am happy that Larry & Lennie are back together.
I remember Lenore siting with her siblings and parents in the pews on the right side of the Edmonton Whyte Avenue Chapel, and the marriage of Lennie and Larry. It was years ago, but she had a beautiful smile and was always happy. Our condolences to the family, may we all remember the example of a righteous woman, mother, and grandmother.
Gary and I send our warmest love, hugs and prayers to all of the Bateman Family! We have been privileged to be aquainted with you. You have been anchors in the Gospel of Jesus Christ . Your examples have touched our lives forever.
We are saddened to hear of. Sister Lennie Bateman’s passing. Our family was blessed to know and work and serve with. When you think of the Bateman’s you think of a couple united in purpose and cause. Committed loving and inspiring parents with equally inspiring children. Our hearts and prayers are with Bateman’s and may they be blessed with a knowledge of the great love so many have for them. One of Gods precious angels has been called home and reunited with her eternal companion. The world is less with the loss of Lennie Bateman but we are so much the greater for all the good the Bateman family has added to the world of so many
May Gods choicest blessings and influence be with all the Bateman family at this time.
Sincerely, Len Barrie
Oh I am so sorry to hear about Sister Bateman. I remember her being so happy and kind. I wasn’t in her home often but when I was I felt welcome and I always felt appreciated by her and President Bateman when I was around them. I had the privilege to enjoy a short trip with them to Spain in 2000 and I cherish that experience. Hugs to you all.
Lennie was a huge influence on me for good during my early years as a young wife and mother in Kelowna. I will never forget the last time I saw her, after many years, at the wedding reception of a mutual friend. I went up to her, uncertain she would remember me. She took one look at me, then took me into her arms for a big hug, saying: “I never forget a face.”
That was Lennie. A beautiful, loving, kind soul who made the world a better place for her having been here.
God be with you ’til we meet again, my friend! ♥
So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing! So happy I got to see her when she came to Edmonton. Thinking of your family!
During my first year of University, Lennie and Larry rescused 4 homeless girls and gave us a home so that we could continue with our studies. They were kind and caring, and fed us and kept us going as only loving “parents” could do. I’m sure they will continue to be that kind of people. My condolences on your loss- Lennie was a great person.
Lennie was one of those beautiful people you never forget. One time she was part of a “Flight to Eternity” and when she looked at me and said what she said in all sincerity, my heart melted and tears filled my eyes. The last time I saw her a year or so ago, my heart once again was touched. Peace.
Sorry to hear of dear Lenny’s passing not having seen her for a time this is a shock never the less Larry and Lennie are rejoicing being in each others company again and this time it will truly be forever.
Love to all Ann& Paul.
Sister Bateman was such a lovely woman. I met her when I joined the YSA in Kelowna years ago in 1996. Her and her husband meant a lot to me and had such strong testimonies of the gospel. My condolences to all her family and friends. XO

I am so sorry to hear of Lennie’s death. I also worked with her at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. We also got together for game night occasionally. What a sweet lady. Her positive attitude filled a room. You are all in my prayers.
We are truly saddened by your mother’s passing. Such a wonderful lady. Always smiling, always pleasant . Lennie and Larry were a positive and kind influence in our lives and helped us in many ways. It is amazing to know that they are now together for all eternity. Our prayers and tears are with you all.
Dan,Suzi,Tami,Barb,Ben,Cari and Joey, Elder Nelson says without love we cannot know true sorrow and this past week i have experienced that deeply as i have mourned the loss of your mother but rejoiced in the love we shared. In contemplating which memories to share it was fun to remember you as children and how wonderful you were! One of the most treasured was the weekend I watched you 4 oldest while your parents brought Benjie home in a winter blizzard after his adoption. Everyone was so overjoyed to have him in your family. My next memory that is so wonderful was being asked to go to your cabin to help keep an eye on you all it was during this time your mom stopped at a fruit stand and got 10lbs of cherries even with 3 adults and 4children and a baby eating them they lasted forever and ever and ever. I am afraid I still cannot handle eating fresh cherries! The last memory I would like to share is about her designing talent as you mentioned in the biography. She and my maid of honor Teresa Crawford put on a bridal shower for me.!One of the activities was dividing the group into 3 and then each group designed a wedding dress for me out of various fasteners and white paper napkins your mom’s group did a fantastic job with a veil and flowers etc unfortunately we can’t put our fingers on my wedding book where I have a photo of this creation but we will keep looking.
Meanwhile my love and prayers this day as you lay her to rest this day. Beth
