We Remember
BONN, Edmund
April 22, 1930 — October 12, 2026
We announce the passing of Edmund “Ed” Bonn on October 12, 2026, who has gone home to his Lord and Saviour, to be reunited with his loved ones who have passed on before him. He was a passive man, the father of six children: Gordon, Ruby (Grant) Costigan, Joanne (Greg) Hank, Susan Bonn (Syd), Kathy (Jerry) Kittle – and the late Doris Bonn. Ed was also the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 17 great-grandchildren.
Dad/Grampa, we love you. Thank you for giving us a full, interesting, fun life growing up. You will be greatly missed, never forgotten, and forever in our hearts.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Helen, who passed in June 2006; his daughter, Doris, in November 2017; and siblings, Walter, Armin, and Alice. He is remembered with love by his surviving brother, Art Bonn, and sister, Martha Schultz, both of Port Colborne, Ontario.
Ed was born in Hallembruch (Skrzypkow), Poland, on April 22, 1930, to Alma and Adolf Bonkowski (changed to Bonn), and emigrated from Bad Salzuflen, Germany, to Canada on July 20, 1948. With the aid of the Canadian Christian Council, from London, Ontario (where he landed as an immigrant), he travelled to Pincher Creek, Alberta, where he was reunited with his mother and four siblings. There (at the age of 18), Edmund worked as a labourer in the farm fields where he met his wife to be, Helen Ebner.
They started their life together in Kitimat, BC, where Ed worked in a gold mine near Kitimat. From there, they moved on to Lethbridge, where Ed was a contractor and also owned and operated a ready-mix concrete truck. Their six children were born in the span of 10 years, after which (in 1966) they moved to Kelowna, BC, and in 1967 purchased orchard property in North Glenmore, where Ed lived in the same farmhouse until just two months before his passing.
Ed’s favorite hobby was fishing, and his second love (just after the love for his family) was animals. At all times he had the companionship of a dog or cat, and of recent (for his pleasure and entertainment) squirrels and birds. The animals were treated so well that often people would exclaim if they could be reincarnated, they would like to come back as one of Ed’s pets.
A note of appreciation goes out to the nurses, aides, and others at Cottonwoods who cared for Edmund in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you donate to the Okanagan Humane Society by mailing your cheque to P.O. Box 29110 OKM, Kelowna, B.C. V1W 4A7, visiting their website okanaganhumanesociety.com/contact, or by leaving your envelope in the bowl provided for that purpose in the foyer of the funeral home.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 27, 2026, at 1:00 pm (PCT), at Springfield Funeral Home (2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC), with a reception to follow. For those who are unable to attend in person (e.g. health, road conditions, etc.), the service will be livestreamed at the time of the service (see below), a recording will be made available to view in 3-5 days.
Ed’s remains have been cremated and the burial will take place with immediate family in the spring. A celebration of Ed’s life is also planned at the Ebner family reunion on July 3, 2027.
