We Remember
BOSER, Doreen (Volk)
February 23, 1943 — October 16, 2019
Doreen Boser (Volk) passed away peacefully at Central Okanagan Hospice House on October 16 at the age of 76 after a long struggle with COPD. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Joe Boser; her brothers Al (Thelma) Volk; and Don (Dorthy) Volk. Doreen is survived by her daughter Susan Boser and son Darran Boser; brothers Ray Volk, Bob (Gwen) Volk, and sister Maryann (Don) Ross, all from Kelowna. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Doreen, the eldest daughter of Vincent and Selma Volk, was born in Buelya, Saskatchewan on Feb 23, 1943, in the local hotel her parents owned and operated. At the age of 4 she moved to Kelowna, where she grew up in the community of Rutland.
Doreen worked as a meat-wrapper and cashier at Finn’s Meat Market, the family business. In 1960 Doreen met Joe Boser, and it was love at first sight. After marrying in 1962, they built their own home, and raised their family. Later, Doreen worked at Kelowna Fruit Packers.
During her 72 years in Rutland, Doreen loved community dances, and was an ardent supporter of the Rutland Rovers. She was a Rutland Rovette, a Kaycette, and a member of the Catholic Women’s League. Doreen also enjoyed bowling, golfing, travelling, computers, reading, and camping with the Good Sam club in the “Bose-mobile.” She was also a skilled seamstress.
Doreen’s priority was the care and love of her family and home. A devoted wife and mother, she loved to garden, attending especially to her flowers. Doreen worked alongside her husband Joe for many years, canning and preparing veggies from the garden, and turning them into wonderful meals. Her passion was cooking and baking, and she loved festivities and all holidays with family and friends.
Doreen was kind-hearted, practical, and honest. She gave her opinion freely, which sometimes made you laugh—or not. She was also a very shrewd businesswoman, frugal with her money, and always insisted on paying cash for a better deal.
Doreen will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family wishes to thank the Palliative Chronic Disease team and the many nurses at Hospice House for the love and care Doreen received.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 10:30 am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (formerly St. Theresa’s) at 750 Rutland Rd N, Kelowna, BC. A luncheon and celebration of her life will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Doreen Boser to the Central Okanagan Hospice House, hospicehousekelowna.com, or the Childcare Department of YMCA of the Okanagan, ymcaokanagan.ca/donate

Dear Sue and Darren. My deepest heart felt sympathies on the loss of your mom. I would have like to be at her service but I was out of town. I will forever remember how your mother always treated me like someone important. I wasn’t just a kid under foot. She always took the time to ask me how I was and then she listened to my answer. Your parents have always had a special place in my heart. Now they are together again watching over you both. May you find comfort in your memories.
Sincerely,
Denise (Gaudreau) Paley
