We Remember
BOSTOCK, Mary Elizabeth “Ann”
May 6, 1934 — September 22, 2023
Mary Elizabeth “Ann” Bostock passed away peacefully on September 22, 2023, aged 89.
Ann was born on May 6, 1934, in Vancouver, BC, to Herbert John William (Jack) and Kathleen Lillie (Griffin) Paterson. She was the younger sister to her beloved brother John Patrick. Her family moved to Kelowna in 1944 while her father was serving overseas in World War II where he was killed in action later that year. Her brother, Patrick, died 3 years later in 1947. Ann graduated from KSS in 1951, after many years of boarding school. That summer, she met the love of her life, Ray Bostock, while working as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at the Aquatic. Ray was a champion oarsman and spent many hours at the Kelowna Rowing Club. In 1952, she became the Princess to the Lady of the Lake, and he was BC’s Athlete of the Year. They were married in 1956 and bought their family home on Lakeshore Road, where they raised their four children and welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren until Ray’s passing in 2011.
Ray and Ann spent many happy weekends waterskiing or fishing on Okanagan Lake or at their cabins at Oyama and Hatheume Lakes. In the summer, she could often be found floating on the water reading a novel. She knit fantastic sweaters for her grandchildren and tried to pass on her love of history. Ann treasured her time as a school secretary at Dorothea Walker Elementary and Okanagan Mission Secondary Schools. After retirement, Ann and Ray wrote stories of Kelowna’s history for the local newspapers, and she volunteered countless hours for the Okanagan Historical Society and the Central Okanagan Bursary & Scholarship Society.
Ann was predeceased 12 years ago by Ray, her husband of 55 years; parents Kathleen and Jack Paterson; and brother Patrick. Ann is survived by her four children Sarah Roberts, Bruce Bostock, Dan Bostock (Reta), and Jim Bostock; grandchildren Heather Eccles, Travis Klettke, Jerrod Klettke, Jeffrey Bostock, Spencer Bostock, Sydney Bostock, Rachel Bostock and Jordan Roberts; 8 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
A Funeral Service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, at 1:00 PM, on Friday, October 13, 2023, with interment, next to Ray, to follow at 2:30 PM at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society (COBBS) to provide post-secondary financial assistance to local grade 12 students.
