BRAUN, Robert Joseph

February 17, 1932 — November 26, 2016

 

Robert passed away November 26, 2016 at the age of 84. He is survived by his son Robert (Corinne) of Kelowna; grandchildren Andrew (Juliane), Christopher (Evelynn); great grandchildren Sebastian and Jaxson; sisters Maria Durr, Edeltraud Reinhard, Anni Cheslovsky and Margit Schmidt, all of Germany; brothers Dieter Braun, Klaus Braun, Alois Braun, all of Germany.  Predeceased by his parents Alois and Walburga Seubert Braun, his wife Marianne (2014) and sister Helga Turner (2015).

Born in Würzburg, Germany in 1932 spending a tumultuous childhood in wartime. Emigrated to Canada in 1951; worked in Northern Ontario as a diamond driller.  Soon afterwards joined by his sweetheart Marianne also of Würzburg, they were married shortly afterwards.  They got on with their lives and in 1956 their son Robert was born.  In 1958 everyone returned to Germany to rebuild a life in the homeland.

After 2 years in 1960, opportunity beckoned yet again and Robert set out to Thompson, Manitoba, where he learned his lifelong trade of pipefitting.

Restless yet again after reuniting the family, they set out to Oliver in the Okanagan to try fruit farming. Eventually he returned to his trade and spent many years in Trail and Vancouver.

In later years he settled in Kelowna to be near his son and family in retirement.

He and his wife Marianne built a home on the Westside of Kelowna overlooking the lake. They spent time involved with their two grandsons and puttering around the house.

A very special thank you to all the staff at Lakeview Lodge – Sunnyside Suites for all their care for Robert during the last 7 months.

A memorial service will be held on December 5, 2016 at 4:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, 2268 Pandosy Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1T2
