We Remember

BROWN, Anna Belle

November 10, 1931 — October 12, 2022

It is with great sorrow that we share the loss of our beloved mother, Anna Brown, she passed on October 12, 2022, at the age of 90.

Anna was born on November 10, 1931, in The Pas, Manitoba, to Henry and Florence Landels. She loved to tell tales of the adventures she and her sisters had growing up on the family farm.

To attend high school, Anna had to board with a family in The Pas, helping to look after the family’s children. She then went on to nursing school in Portage la Prairie. After becoming qualified as a nurse, she moved to Ontario with her friend, Violet, working at a number of hospitals across the province.

She met her husband, Donald A. Brown, while playing badminton with Violet at the YMCA in Timmins, Ontario. They were married on January 1, 1957, at his parent’s place in Shillington, Ontario.

Anna followed Don to Atikokan and then to a number of other mining towns in northern Ontario as an “itinerant” miner’s wife. After the last of their three boys were born, the family moved out to British Columbia, first to Merritt then on to Texada Island. Later there were moves to Whitehorse, back to Texada, Edmonton, Comox and then back to Edmonton. She spent her time “keeping house”, raising her three boys, gardening, and curling, as well as working in nursing.

When they moved back to Edmonton, Alberta, Anna returned to nursing full time as a psychiatric nurse in the forensic adolescent program at Alberta Hospital. Unfortunately, Don died of a heart attack when he was only 58 in May 1990.

Anna didn’t retire from Alberta Hospital until she was 70, she then moved to Kelowna, British Columbia to be closer to her son’s growing family.

Anna passed away in her sleep at the Kelowna General Hospital. She will be sadly missed by her sister Doreen (Gil) Sanchez; three sons Donald, Douglas (Annette), and Eric (Donna); three granddaughters Victoria (Dylan) Dion, Emily; and Siouxsie; and three great-grandchildren Edmond, Berlynne; and Saoirse; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many special, life-long friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald A. Brown (d.1990), brother Jim (d.2017), sister Joyce (d.2016), brother John “Jack” (d.2007), mother Florence (d.1982) and father Harry (d.1972).
