We Remember

CARSON, Helma (nee Rotschenk)

June 18, 1942 — December 21, 2015

Born June 18, 1942 in Cervenka, Yugoslavia, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2015 at the Hospice House in Kelowna, BC at the age of 73.  Helma is survived by her husband, Allan; daughter Chris Konig of Kelowna; son Tony Carson (Nancy) of Port Coquitlam; grandchildren Kim Stobbe, Laura Konig, and Sunny and Mitchell Carson; great grandchildren Kennedy, Aiden, and Rylee Stobbe; and her brother John Rotschenk (Bonnie) of Chatham, ON.  Helma came to Canada at the age of 4 and grew up and went to school in Chatham, Ontario.  Married, she came to British Columbia in 1964 where she worked as a traveller in the jewellery industry for many years, earning the honour of Traveller of the Year on more than one occasion.  She was highly respected by both her customers and competitors alike, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her as she was a very caring person.  Our family would like to send a special thank you to the Westbank Interior Health support team and the Central Okanagan Hospice House for their care of our loving Wife, Mother, Grandma, and Nanny.  A service will be held in Vancouver in the Spring of 2016.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 202-1835 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 3H5.

  • JUDY RACICOT says:

I HAD THE PLEASURE TO KNOW HELMA FOR 36 YEARS. WE WERE BOTH IN THE JEWELLERY BUSINESS TOGETHER. ITS NO WONDER HELMA WAS AWARDED JEWELLER TRAVELLER OF THE YEAR ON MANY OCCASIONS AS SHE WAS SO THOROUGH, DEPENDABLE ,PUNCTUAL, AND HONEST . I ALWAYS KNEW IF HELMA SAID SHE WOULD DO OR SEND AN ITEM IT WOULD BE DONE. HELMA LOVED HER JOB AND LOVED HER CUSTOMERS. I DO NOT KNOW IF SHE REALISED HOW VERY MUCH SHE WAS LOVED. MY STAFF LOVED IT EVERY TIME HELMA WALKED THROUGH OUR DOOR TO SPEND THE DAY WITH US. IF WE HAPPENED TO BE BUSY WITH CUSTOMERS SHE WOULD GRAB A KEY AND START SERVING THEM AND SELLING PRODUCTS THAT WERE NOT EVEN RELATED TO HERS. THAT WAS HELMA!!! SHE ALWAYS PUT EVERYBODY FIRST AHEAD OF HERSELF. LATER, AFTER WE BOTH RETIRED HELMA AND I BECAME VERY CLOSE AND WE BECAME BEST FRIENDS. WE GOLFED TOGETHER, VACATIONED TOGETHER, AND JUST HUNG OUT TOGETHER. WE HAD A BALL, TALKING NON STOP FOR HOURS AND THEN NOT HAVING A CLUE WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT WE WOULD LOOK AT EACH OTHER AND JUST LAUGH. HELMA LOVED LIFE AND ALL THE PEOPLE IN HER LIFE. HER FAMILY WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ON EARTH TO HER. ON SEPTEMBER 2ND WE WERE GOLFING WHEN ON THE 11TH HOLE HELMA GOT A HOLE IN ONE . IT WAS AMAZING!!! WE CELEBRATED AND SHE LOOKED THE PICTURE OF HEALTH. A FEW WEEKS LATER MY FRIEND WAS GIVEN THE DEVASTATING NEWS . WE WERE ALL COMPLETELY DEVASTATED BUT IN TRUE HELMA FASHION SHE BRAVED THROUGH INVESTIGATING DIFFERENT OPTIONS BUT WHEN THERE WERE NO OPTIONS LEFT SHE WAS SO UNBELIEVABLY STRONG. SHE NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT PAIN, EVEN THOUGH WE KNEW IT WAS THERE. SHE EVEN KEPT HER INCREDIBLE SENSE OF HUMOUR TIL THE END. I SPOKE WITH HER 2 DAYS BEFORE SHE PASSED AND SHE ASKED ME HOW OUR DOG WAS. THATS HELMA. IT WAS NEVER ABOUT HER. I WILL MISS YOU MY FRIEND ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU OR THE TIMES WE SHARED. YOU ARE THE BEST FRIEND I HAVE EVER HAD. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THE GIFT OF YOU, HELMA CARSON. I HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN AND WE WILL PLAY ANOTHER 9. I LOVE YOU HELMA. JUDY RACICOT.

We send our deepest sympathies to Al, Chris, and Tony and their families. Helma’s bright smile, big hugs and wonderful sense of humour always brightened up the room……whether it was in her Coquitlam home, neighbourhood pubs or General Paint social events. Helma was the life of the party. She was very caring and often asked about our young family. We will always cherish our fond memories of Helma. Love Colleen and Dave Peterson

  • Pat Whitehead says:

I have just sadly heard of Helma’s passing and it has saddened my heart! I knew her over the years in the jewellery industry in which I left some 7 yrs ago but have spoken of her at different times since , when talking about ” the best sales LADY in the industry”. She was a mentor for me in my early days in the business. We had many great times and laughs over the years at the many trade shows we attended together. My deepest condolences go out to her loved ones.
I wont forget her smile and laughter…
