CHECKLEY, Michael William “Bill”
July 10, 1951 — September 10, 2024
“Bill” Michael William Checkley passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 10, 2024, at the age of 73, in Kelowna, BC. Born on July 10, 1951, Bill was a passionate and vibrant soul who embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kimberly; children Mike (Angela) and Erika; and grandchildren Lukah, Rylen, and Cora; his mother Evelyn; brothers Brian (Jen), Gerry (Carrie) and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father William. He was loved so deeply by his family.
Bill spent his career at Telus, beginning there at a young age and serving the company until his retirement. Although Bill was great at his job, his passion was family, friends, and adventures. He was a loyal and compassionate person who always showed up to help out.
A dedicated sailor, Bill was an active member of the Kelowna Yacht Club for 41 years. He competed in numerous sailing events, including the Whidbey Island Race Week, St. Maarten Heineken Cup, Swiftsure, Cow Bay, and many regattas. His love for sailing brought him immense joy and camaraderie with fellow racers.
Bill’s adventurous spirit extended beyond the water. He completed an unforgettable journey to Base Camp at Mt. Everest, rode to Sturgis on his beloved Harley, and shared countless adventures with friends.
An avid skier, Bill enjoyed downhill skiing at with his family, often relishing the thrill of cat skiing. He also embraced motorcycling, tennis, kayaking, running, and golf, showcasing his love for the outdoors and sports. Bill lived life to the fullest, always seeking new experiences and challenges.
His adventurous spirit will continue to inspire us as we cherish the memories we shared. He will be truly missed by all.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at the Kelowna Yacht Club, 1370 Water Street, Kelowna, BC.
