We Remember

Costa, Lucinda Rodrigues

March 22, 1939 — January 3, 2023

Lucinda Rodrigues Costa passed on January 3, 2023, at Kelowna, BC, surrounded by her family.

Lucinda was born on March 22, 1939, to Antonio and Maria Goncalves in Casegas, Portugal.  She was one of eight siblings: Jesus, Joe, Tony, Lurdes, John, Ceu, and Maria.

Lucinda and Amandio were married in Casegas on January 6, 1962.  Their son, Tony, was born in 1963. The couple left Portugal in 1964 to build a new life in Kelowna, British Columbia, where Amandio’s two brothers had already settled with their families.

In 1966, Lucinda’s parents and some of her siblings immigrated to Kelowna. One month later, their daughter Lidia was born. Lucinda and Amandio worked long hours in the orchards to build a future for their young family. Their dream of purchasing their own orchard came true in 1970. They were able to build a beautiful life together through hard work and dedication to family.

Lucinda loved caring for her flower garden as well as crocheting, knitting, and cooking.  Family gatherings brought her the most joy, where you would often find her around the children. Cards, Skip Bo, and dominoes were typically played with the Portuguese channel (and occasionally Wheel of Fortune) in the background. Lucinda took pride in all the fruits and vegetables grown by her and Amandio. She loved seeing all the customers that would come each year to buy produce.

Lucinda loved new places and travelled with Amandio to Portugal, to the Azores, Madeira, France, Hawaii, Australia, Hong Kong, California, Germany, Spain, Morocco, and Israel. She was very excited to go to Japan on her own to visit her grandchildren. For their 50th anniversary, Lucinda and Amandio travelled to Playa del Carmen with the kids and grandchildren. Although she travelled the world, her favourite place to visit was her hometown of Casegas.

Lucinda will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her beloved husband Amandio; her son, Tony (Tomoko); her daughter, Lidia (Todd); and her cherished granddaughters, Breanna (Jordy), Aya, Celina, and Julia. Her memory will also be held by her siblings and their families: Jesus Lopes (deceased), Jose Goncalves (Manuela), Tony (Connie) Goncalves, Lurdes (Antonio-Joao) Barata, John (Lourdes) Goncalves, Ceu (Agostinho) Duarte, Maria (John) Byland. The list is a long one – all the nieces, nephews, cousins, and the countless loved ones that Lucinda considered family.

Lucinda touched the lives of many. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Every visit, phone and video call from loved ones were cherished.

We will always remember her for her caring nature, generosity, strength, work ethic, and honesty, but mostly for her endless love. Lucinda, you gave us so much to remember you by, and we will always love you.

In memory of Lucinda, donations may be made to the Kelowna Hospice House, where she was cared for lovingly until the moment she became an angel in heaven.
