We Remember

DANIEL, Albert (Bill) William John

August 18, 1919 — August 13, 2014

Bill was born in Cereal, Alberta, in 1919, the second of five children to Welsh immigrants, Albert and Florence Daniel, of the homesteading community of Buffalo, Alberta. Raised on the farm through both the prosperous years of the 20’s and the painful, dustbowl years of the Great Depression, Bill was raised to face hardships head-on. Like most men of his age, he proudly enlisted to serve his country in WW II, bringing all his skills and mechanical know-how to his role, as a mechanic on Spitfire aircraft, serving for five years, attached mostly to 412 Squadron, 126 Wing. He met and married Amy, with whom he had three children: Lloyd, Earl and Ian.

After the war, Bill had so many successful careers, it’s difficult to count. He was a fisheries officer, owned large Caterpillar bulldozers for road building in northern Alberta, owned a car garage, a taxi business, sold cars and real estate, repaired microscopes, drove an airport-to-airport courier service and lastly, served with a security firm at the modern Calgary airport.

Through it all, Bill always had a love of camping and the great outdoors. His trailering years with his wife, Kay, took them from northern British Columbia to Arizona, with lengthy family times in the Kelowna and Squamish areas, making deep and lasting friendships wherever they touched down.

Bill is pre-deceased by his wife, Kay, his two sisters, Dorothy and Gwyneth, and his friend and life-long companion, his brother Lloyd. A son, also named Lloyd, was laid to rest only months ago, as was a grandson, Byron. His one remaining sister, Marjorie, aches with the loss of her dear brother, Bill. Sons, Earl and Ian, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren will long remember the influence he had in their lives. He will be dearly missed by friends and family alike, for his wisdom, his wit and his touching sense of class.

A Memorial Service will be held for his many friends and family at his home church of Westside Alliance, 2011 Daimler Drive, West Kelowna, at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 23rd. A luncheon will follow.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation, #4 – 1551 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”
