We Remember

DARBY, Francis “Frank” Wood

October 3, 1926 — February 19, 2022

Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to many, Frank Darby passed away on February 19, 2022.

Born to the late Cornelius and Elizabeth Darby on October 3, 1926, Frank grew to become outgoing and charming. ‘Darby’ entertained many with stories of his adventures from every part of his life. In WWIl, at 18 yrs of age, he enlisted as a merchant marine and was the ship’s Radio Operator. He travelled to many exotic places and had a story for just about every place he went. Upon returning home, he bought a farm which he operated for several years and from these experiences more stories were created. The final chapter in the Work-Related story book was when he worked for Air Canada from ’67 to ’91 and true to form, more events were added to the ‘For Conversation’ memory chest to share with old/new friends. Then came the Golf story book, the fun-est book of all; ‘Darby’ continually challenged himself, whether it be trying to outscore his much younger golf buddies to playing golf in his 90th year – still walking the course!

He was an amazing man! He will be missed by many, but his stories will live on.

Left to remember him: Tricia and her children and grandchildren, and his mother-in-law, Peggy Clark. He is survived by his daughter Catharine (Jerry); grandchildren Ashleigh and Graham; and his six great-grandchildren; also, his nieces and nephews and his grandnephews and grandnieces: niece Mary Witmer (Paul), nephew David Darby (Terry), nephew Robert Darby (Helen), and all of their children.

As well as his parents, he was predeceased by his older brother Cornelius “Neil” Darby and sister-in-law Elizabeth.

Thoughts of you transcend time.

I was so sad to hear of Frank’s passing. I am happy to have known a man like Frank. He had a wealth of experience and a natural curiosity about life that always made you listen when he spoke. Remarkably healthy and physically fit, he could still walk the course and recently played his age as a score, when he gave the game up about four years ago .

  • Terry and David Darby says:

Uncle Frank will be so missed by our family. Over the years we enjoyed many trips to the west coast. Our boys were particularly impressed with Uncle Frank being the avid golfer well into his later years. He always welcomed us warmly and we especially enjoyed hearing about his life and the Darby routes. Such a kind, gentle man. This past November we flew out with the purpose of visiting Uncle Frank and are so thankful for the wonderful, always interesting visits. Our thoughts are with Trish, Catherine and family in the loss of such a wonderful person.
