We Remember

de TOMBE, Johannes Franciscus “John”

January 19, 1931 — July 17, 2024

Johannes Franciscus de Tombe, born on January 19, 1931, in the Netherlands, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024. Johannes, known for his resilience and strength, lived through the challenging times of World War II in Rotterdam, Holland, which shaped his perspective on life and instilled in him a deep appreciation for peace and community service. He moved to England in his youth, where he trained and worked as an electrician, a career that he pursued with diligence and pride. Eventually, he settled in Canada, a place he lovingly called home.

Johannes was a devoted husband to his wife Ann (1931-1970), with whom he shared a deep love and cherished memories. His commitment to helping others was evident through his volunteer work with the Red Cross, where he made significant contributions to the welfare of those in need. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and dedication to family, as survived by his son John; daughters, Suze, Cindy, and Andrea; and his seven adoring grandchildren. Johannes was also predeceased by his partner, Zenaida Alavata (1940-2023), with whom he shared the last 30 years of his life.

His life was a testament to the enduring spirit of hope and the power of love to transcend all obstacles. Johannes will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us.

A private Memorial Service will be held in his honour, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross in his memory, continuing his legacy of service.

  • Dave Strickland says:

John was well respected at CIBC, and was known as the guy to go to for anything that was Controls related. While John was at CIBC, we used to joke that nobody ever took as many power hit interruptions as John…and he was the only operator at that time who never ” lost ” the place…meaning the building never went dark while JD was on shift. Extremely smart Man he was. His mind never stopped working and his talents with calligraphy and egg shell painting are legendary. John taught me calligraphy and I still do some from time to time. God Bless him, and I remember him as the most patient and gentle person I have ever met.
