We Remember

DELCOURT, Yvette

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing on March 21, 2016, of a very special lady. She was a loving and supportive mother who was always there for her three kids, an unbelievable grandma to her seven grandchildren and a loyal and faithful friend to all that she touched in her community. Survived by her three children, Glennys (David), Grant (Wendy), Gregg (Barb) as well as her loved grandchildren, Jaxon, Jayda and Jarvis Jurome, Hannah and Madison Delcourt, Taia and Jack Delcourt-Condon and her sister-in-law Diana. Predeceased by her husband Glenn and her Dad and Mom. We just lost a dedicated and caring woman, a pillar of our community, who was passionate about developing youth sport in the area of figure skating of Kelowna for the past 43 years. Yvette was born in Duncan, BC on October 23, 1940 and soon moved to Nanaimo where she discovered her passion for figure skating. It was this sport that she pursued as an athlete, coach, volunteer and as an administrator until the day of her passing.   Yvette’s love of skating started at age six on Vancouver Island. Many summers were spent travelling to Kelowna, across Canada and to Sun Valley to take part in summer school sessions. At the age of 18, Yvette started her career as a figure skating coach in Nanaimo. Her creativity and love of teaching was reflected in the many carnivals she produced and skaters she coached. After attending the Victoria College Teacher Training School, Yvette and her loving husband Glenn, moved to Prince George where she taught school and skating. She married her husband of 51 years on November 30, 1962 in Nanaimo where they resided briefly before moving to Prince George for 10 years. In 1973 they moved to the Okanagan, settling in Kelowna where she resided until her death.   Yvette’s love of skating was only second to her passion for family. Family meant everything to Mom and many dinners turned into long evenings of laughter and memorable conversations. She was such an important nurturing role in the lives of each child and grandchild and her strong moral compass helped shape who they are today. Over the years, her greatest moments of enjoyment were spent travelling with her family, including following her kids and grand-kids to all of their figure skating, hockey, gymnastics and tennis events across Canada. She was their biggest fan!   Yvette’s love for life will be remembered by her infectious laugh, her quest for knowledge and her ability to light up a room with her smile. Her strong commitment to family, to her friends and to figure skating was unparalleled. Yvette was someone, as a mother, grandmother, friend and leader that brought out the best in everyone, but never wanted any of the recognition. Through her dedication to her family and youth sport in Kelowna, Yvette has made the world a better place. She has truly made a difference in all of the lives she touched. We will miss her dearly, but our memories will stay with us forever.   A celebration of Yvette’s life will be held on Saturday, March 26 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Manteo Resort Waterfront Hotel at 3762 Lakeshore Rd. It is a drop-in open house to join family and friends in memory of such a special lady.  There will be a tribute to Yvette to take place at 4:00 pm.  There will be a funeral service celebrated on Monday March 28 at 1:30 pm at the St. Charles Garnier Parish at 3645 Benvoulin Road, Kelowna, BC.   Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com.  In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made payable to the Kelowna Figure Skating Club in honor of our Mom.  These funds will be put towards a bursary for a skater that represents the same passion for the sport as our Mom.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

  • Brian Pound says:

Yvette was a remarkable, hard working member of the BC skating family. She went about her volunteer work in her own quiet, efficient way. She made things work, an example her job as co-chair of the Skate Canada International event in Kelowna two years ago, considered one of the best organized held to date. As the skating Section PR I will miss one of the truely fine ladies I have had the privilege to work alongside. Rest in peace my friend.

So incredibly sad to hear we have lost such a beautiful lady in our Skating Family! Her love of our sport & her care to everyone she touched will live on! Yvette was so class all the way & we were all so fortunate to know her. I’m sure going to miss my “catch up emails” with her! I joined the Kelowna Skating Club as a 12-year old and here it is over 35 years later & we kept in touch. She was very proud of her children & grandchildren. My deepest condolences to the Delcourt/Jurome families losing such a great Mom/Grandma. She will never be forgotten! <3

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Yvette’s passing. After having been inspired by Yvette as a skating coach and your Mom so many years ago, I was so happy to have reconnected with her in the past couple of years through my own daughter’s skating. My condolences to you and your family.

  • Sheila Graham says:

I’m so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I enjoyed her good humour and bright spirit for two years we shared classes at Phoenix Fitness. I always admired how easily Yvette could do the “airplane stance” – balancing on one leg with other leg and arms outstretched. Once I learned about her figuring skating history, I was no longer surprised by her good balance. Her training served her well.
After I learned she was your mother, Glennis, I shared my gratitude for the kind understanding in your teaching of our youngest daughter at Glenmore Elementary. You were a positive force in her life, and she still speaks of you with admiration. I can see that you learned that kindness (at least in part) from your mother.
In our small community of Phoenix Fitness, she will be sorely missed.
    Sheila Graham

  • Amanda Duncan says:

    Dear Delcourt Family,
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Yvette, known to me as Mrs. Delcourt when I was a young girl. Mrs.Delcourt was my 1st Figure Skating coach, she taught me everything and was huge part of my like when I was young. She was there, my practices, competitions. Her passion for figure skating started my passion, I loved every moment of it.
My deepest sympathies, she was an amazing lady.

  • Brigid Walters says:

Yvette was one of my oldest friends. We started school together at Queen Margaret’s School in Duncan and then at St. Ann’s in Tzouhalem. I am so sorry that we lost touch. We were good friends for many years, and I remember her with much love.
I have photos of when we were kids, if you are interested. I live onVancouver Island.

  • Brigid Walters says:

I just googled Yvette, as I hadn’t been in touch with her for years. I am s sorry to read her obituary, that is not what I wanted to see. Yvette and I started school together, at Queen Margaret’s in Duncan, and stayed in touch off and on for many years.
Goodbye, my dear old friend, and I am so sorry that we lost touch.
