We Remember

DROSZIO, HANS

Hans Karl-August Leopold Droszio passed peacefully in Kelowna on Thursday, December 29th, 2016 at the age of 91. He is survived by his son GJ (Mary) of Victoria and two daughters: Brigitte Haywood of Kelowna and Monika Kun (David) of Edmonton; as well as seven grandchildren: Laura (Hisham), Sheli, Angeline (Dave), Weldon, Amanda, Sarah, Alyssa; great-grandchild Isis and by nieces Martina and Heidi and their families in Germany.

Hans was sadly predeceased by his wife Erika, his younger brother Gunter, and niece Gabriele. Our family is extremely grateful to Dr. Ronald Schriemer for his compassionate care of our father and Opa over the last 16 years and especially for his daily visits for the last ten days at hospice.

After losing his beloved Erika in 2011, Hans resided for the past four years at the Dorchester Retirement Home; we extend our thanks to all the staff there, for creating such a caring and friendly atmosphere. Hans was passionate about his hobby as a Marklin model railroader who took pleasure in spending many hours designing and meticulously building realistic layouts and picturesque miniature sceneries with attention to the smallest detail, such as hand painting figurines, often only a centimetre in size.

Hans was born in Brandenburg, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1952. After a turbulent ten-day ocean crossing, he arrived by train in northern Ontario on New Year’s Day, not knowing a soul and not speaking English. The first few months were challenging as the city boy from Berlin got a job in the bush as a lumberjack and hauled wood out by horse. Erika, with their young son and first daughter, joined Hans later that year, once he had started working for the railroad. The family eventually settled in Wawa, Ontario where Hans was a well respected long-hole blaster at Algoma Steel’s ore division, where he worked until he retired. Hans and Erika spent many enjoyable years on their acreage in Mara Lake, B.C. and later in Kelowna. One of their favourite past times together was to sit on their back deck and watch the wide variety of wildlife that Hans was able to entice into the yard with a multitude of bird and squirrel feeders.

As per Han’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. Cremation and interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Dear Brigitte and Monika
Wishing you our sincere condolences. My parents Ron and Adele Jakubowski had many wonderful visits with your mom and dad, here in Kelowna as well as when your parents still lived in Mara. They shared many coffee’s together. I recall one visit to their home here in Kelowna when Helm and I were also included and we had the privilege of seeing the train room. It was magical. The attention to detail Hans had was amazing. He was truly talented and passionate about his hobby. May your wonderful memories bring you comfort. I’m sure our parents are now enjoying a cup of heavens version of coffee together!
