We Remember

DUBIE, Catherine “Cathie”

Our beloved mom, Catherine “Cathie” Dubie passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 29, 2021, due to complications arising from heart surgery.  She is survived by her children and their families: Allie (Mic) McCollum and their children Caleb and Anna; Will and his children Hannah and Brier; Cyndi and her two daughters Ansleigh and Dannan;  Jordi; and their father Brian.   She will be reuniting with her sisters Stephany McKay and Susan Dubie as well as her mother Alice Dubie who are already in God’s arms.

Cathie was a kind and generous woman who embraced life’s challenges and lived to help others.  Following her passion for arts and crafts, she opened her own craft store “Kit’s Crafts” in her early twenties.  Her adventurous spirit brought her out west to BC shortly thereafter.  Continuing with her desire to learn new things and help people, Cathie worked for Apple Canada (before Apple was hip 😊) and worked to bring computers into schools in the Okanagan.  She received awards from Apple Canada for her excellent sales and from Apple Canada Education for her support and vision.

Cathie took some time after that to raise her two younger children.  She enjoyed the university experience taking some courses at Okanagan College before embarking on her second career.  For the last 17 years, Cathie has developed a blind installation and repair business as well as a cleaning business.  She was known as the “Blind Lady” and could repair almost anything!  Her diminutive frame often confused people when she showed up to install, but she was a consummate professional sought after throughout the valley.  We always joked that when God needed new window coverings in heaven, He’d know who to call; and He did.

All who knew Cathie knew she loved God, and she loved her family.  She was always looking to embody God’s love by helping anyone she could, and truly lived in God’s grace.  She was loved and will be missed terribly.

In light of the current COVID-19 restrictions there will be no service at this time.  We are planning to hold a celebration of life to correspond with her birthday in August.  In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Edmonton Community Foundation for the Catherine Dubie Memorial Fund In Memory of Catherine Dubie.  This fund will be used to continue Cathie’s legacy of helping people in perpetuity.

My good friend Cathie will be sorely missed. She was a real help for me before I retired from Hunter Douglas. I could always count on her to come to my beckon call when things went awry. One of the first times she stepped into a problem we were having with a motorized skylight blind that she had to take down from 14’ up on the ceiling. She worked on that blind for well over 2 hours and would not give up until she made it sing. The homeowners had never seen such tenacity. She always made me look good.
After retirement we only chatted once in awhile. Before that I would call her on my way to church which is a 25 minute drive and she would would give me a “Cathie sermon”. As she quoted from Wordsworth and the like. One of my favourite quotes from her was: “Get under the spout where the glory comes out”
To say she was one of a kind would be an understatement for sure.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
