We Remember

EDGEWORTH, Charlene Barbara (nee Ferris)

Charlene Barbara Edgeworth (nee Ferris) was born April 2nd, 1939 to Charles Robert Ferris and Barbara Agnes Ferris (nee McIntosh) in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.  She was followed by her sister Elspeth Thressa on May 18th, 1949.

Charlene grew up on the family farm in Portage La Prairie where she pitched in with the family chores from milking cows to bringing lunch to the farmers in their fields.  In 1956 she graduated from Portage Collegiate Institute and then went off to Manitoba Teachers College in Winnipeg where she graduated with a teaching certificate in 1959.

In 1958 she met Kenneth Edgar Edgeworth and they married on July 10, 1965.  They initially moved to Winnipeg where she taught school.  In 1966, Charlene & Ken moved west to British Columbia, initially to Victoria, and then throughout B.C. until later settling in Kelowna.  She continued to teach until her first son Charles Kenneth came along on June 2nd, 1970 and shortly followed by her second son Neil Blair Ferris on July 28th, 1971.  The two young boys kept her busy.  As an active Mom, she took a keen interest in their activities, be it skating, hockey, skiing, soccer, snowboarding, cub scouts or cadets.   Charlene started her second career as a care aide in 1988, where she worked at Cottonwoods Care Facility.  This facility would later become the home of her mother Barbara and where Charlene’s final days would be spent.

In 1997 she lost her son Neil, to a tragic accident but continued to keep his name alive through a bursary at Kelowna Secondary School and supporting a snowboard competition at Big White.  As time passed others preceded her, including her father Charlie in 1998, her mother Barbara in 2008, and then later her husband Ken in 2008.  An area of strength was her faith and the Rutland United Church family, which was also the church of her parents.

As people left her life others came into it, including her long anticipated granddaughter Isabel Victoria.  The love and bond between them was mutually strong even over a distance.  Charlene overcame many challenges over her lifetime, but while determined, she lost her lengthy battle with cancer on February 4th, 2014.  With Elspeth , and Hazel at her side, along with the compassionate staff of Cottonwoods she slipped away to join her son, husband, mother & father.  Survived by her loving family, sister Elspeth Bird, son Charles, daughter-in-law Vania and granddaughter Isabel.  She will also be missed by her in-law’s Bert Edgeworth, Helen and Gary Klatt, Olive Proctor, Hazel and John Edgeworth Gunn, Vera and Glenis Edgeworth, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the amazing staff on Unit E at Cottonwoods Care Facility for their special care and consideration given to Charlene and her family.  Memories last forever.
