We Remember

FLETCHER, Leo Richard “Dick” – LCDR (Retired)
May 2, 1926 — May 31, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rev. Leo Richard Fletcher on May 31, 2025, at the age of 99.
Dick is survived by his brother Buster; daughters Deborah, Regena (Randy), and Jennifer (Larry); son Rick (Ruth); 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Dick was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Antonia; his daughter Brenda; and son-in-law Werner.
Dick was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Urma, AB, with 10 students ranging from Grades 1- 9. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to Uncas, AB, where they farmed Black Angus beef. After school, he served in the Navy from 1944 to 1947 on the HMS Warrior Aircraft carrier. In 1949, he met Antonia at a Valentine’s Day party, and they were married in 1951.
In 1965, the family moved to Kelowna, BC, where he managed 3 One Hour Martinizing dry cleaning locations. Then he got a job as a custodian with the School District until he retired.
Dick was very involved with his church, St. Michael’s Anglican church, and was ordained in 1984. He served as a Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion and the Kelowna General Hospital well into his nineties.
The first Commanding Officer for the Admiral Stirling Navy League Cadet Corp (which is the second-oldest Corp in Canada), Dick was also the Commanding Officer for the RCSCC Grenville Sea Cadets Corp. He was a central part of the Remembrance Day ceremonies for decades. His many recognitions included the 2004 Member of the Year award from the Royal Canadian Naval Association, the 2009 Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, and the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In later years, he was the president of the Kelowna Naval Association and produced many monthly newsletters. He loved technology and had every electronic gadget available. He even produced, and starred in several “Kiss the Cook” baking episodes that he posted on Facebook.
He was the best Dad, father-in-law, and Grandpa. Dick will always walk beside us with the memories we created and have shared.
The family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for the kind care received from all the staff at the David Lloyd Jones facility.

What a privilege to have known this sweet gentleman. We had many wonderful conversations. Condolences to his family. You will be missed.
For all my cousins, I have many fond & funny memories of Uncle Dick starting from a very young age. I was fortunate to work with him & live close by after high school. Both him & Aunt Toni were very helpful & supportive for me with my young children.. I will miss him. My sincerest condolences for the family. 🙏🙏 Terri
So sorry to hear of Uncle Dick’s passing. He was such a special soul. I was lucky enough to have been able to spend some precious time with him during the years I lived in British Columbia. He shared many memories of himself and his sister , my mom, when growing up. I cherish his memories. May he rest in peace. He will be missed.
We give our heartfelt sympathies to all of his extended family. We met him later in his life through our daughter-in-law, Mickey. He was a real gentleman with a great sense of humour.
