We Remember

FLINTOFT, Bertha Helen

February 28, 1916 — November 16, 2013

Slipped away peacefully in Kelowna on Saturday November 16 2013. Born in Dingolfing Germany on February 28th 1916, she came to Kelowna with her parents and grew up in the Black Mountain area, attending the old Rutland School on horseback. She married her husband, the late George Flintoft in 1940 and they ran the Glenmore store until George went off to war, leaving her behind with their only son, Douglas. Later she enjoyed many happy years on Manhattan Drive. In retirement, they moved to the Family farm on McKinley Road. Bertha worked hard alongside George and produced many delicious meals for whoever stopped by. When George passed away, she moved to town, leaving the family home to her son and daughter in law, Jean.

Bertha was a hard working 40 year member of the Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of First United Church. She treasured her family and friendships and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

She is survived by her son, Doug (Jean) Flintoft of Kelowna, two much loved grandchildren; Jonathan Flintoft of Port McNeill, Gayle Armstrong (Arrol) of Whitby, Ontario and her beloved great grandchildren, Makenna and Jonathan Armstrong. Also missed by her loving companion, Chera Harris.

The family thanks Drs. Swart and Wickstrom and David Lloyd Jones Home staff for their wonderful care of Bea in her final days. A Funeral Service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 22, 2013. My condolences to Doug and his family. George and Bertha were my God Parents and we shared a special day together my birthday ,their anniversary. I was the best 25 th anniversary gift they both used to say. My most memorable moments were the farm and branding cows with my Dad Stan Freier. Bertha often mentioned a picture of me in my cowboy hat as a young girl at the farm, she treasured that picture kept saying she would give it to me but deep down it was her treasure. Awesome cook she was ,gentle ,thoughtful. I remember the blue GM truck George bought she was so mad at him because she couldn’t get in the truck George the thoughtful guy he was built a step that slid out when the door got opened.awesome childhood memories on the farm ,I going to miss her as much as George. Together again Bertha and her George. Love Sandi Freier – Giddings

    Doug and Jean
We heard of Bertha’s passing here in the UK from Fran and Mike Skitkos who had read her obituary in the local newspaper. We were so sorry to hear that she had died. We were certain that she was going to make a century. She was a lovely lady, charming and with a wicked sense of humour. We always enjoyed entertaining her at the Shack on Big White and visiting her at her home where she always made us feel specially welcome. In particular we have fond memories of BBQs at the farm. She is going to be sorely missed by all her family and many friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love from us both

  • Hugh Bradford says:

What fond memorie I have of Bertha and her late husband, George. Many an hour Stan and I spent with them in our younger years, helping George build his boat dock at the waterfront on their farm. After a few hours of work, we would return to the house and be treated to a super meal. Later, Bertha would apologize saying that it wasn’t as good as it should be. But we thought it was superb. Her bright and positive personality was always a pleasure and made her a joy to be with.

  • Thorie Andreas says:

My sincere sympathy to all the family. I have only recently had the pleasure of knowing Bertha through Hospice House. We had a number of pleasant visits there as well as in the David Lloyd Jones home. She had a very pleasant manner and was easy to talk to. I will miss our conversations and getting to know what things were like in Kelowna in the earlier years. From our discussions, I know she really treasured her family, was a very good cook and enjoyed working in the store.
    My condolences,
    Thorie Andreas

  • Marilyn Morrison says:

Doug and Jean, The Morrison family has such wonderful memories of Bertha and George. We so looked forward to going to the farm and having those wonderful “farm” lunches. We will all miss her. She was a dear friend of the Morrison family. Such wonderful stories she could tell about the Morrison kids when they were growing up. Bertha touched so many lives. She was such a giving and loving person and will be missed by many. We all send our love. Marilyn, Cory, Kelly, Brenda, Lane and Shari.
