We Remember

FONTOURA, Matilde Teixeira

1925 – 2020

The family of Matilde Fontoura regret to announce her passing on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at the age of 95. She is survived by her daughters Isabel Furtado (Juve), of Vernon, BC, Terri Hill (Jim) of Vancouver, BC, Arlinda Fontoura (Keith) of Vernon, BC, and Rose Campbell (Don) of Calgary, AB; son Joseph Fontoura (Sandy) of  Pincher Creek, AB; grandchildren Damien, Joel, Tyler, Kaelyn, Kyle, Filipe, Scott, Sarah and Nicole; great-grandchild Madelyn Fontoura; sisters  Amelia Pessoa (Manuel) and Deolinda Teixeira (Angelo); brother Jose Pio Teixeira (Maria do Ceu); and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arlindo Fontoura; parents Palmira and Filipe Teixeira; brother Filipe; and sister Marquinhas.

Our beloved mom, grandma and great-grandma (avomae), was born in Sonim, 1925 in a small town in Northern Portugal.  She had an amazing zest for life and endless energy up to her 94th year when her health deteriorated.  She married her childhood sweetheart Arlindo in 1950, and in 1962 they immigrated to Canada.  They resided in Winnipeg, MB until their retirement to Kelowna, BC in 1992.  Mom was an exceptional seamstress, knitter, crochet, cook and baker and always made certain to have everyone’s favourite dishes at family gatherings.  Her five children, their spouses, and nine grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life, as would have been her first great-grandchild.  We spent many happy summer vacations at Mom and Dad’s home in Kelowna and those happy memories come to life through the many photo albums that recorded those special times.  Mom’s other passion was her huge vegetable garden and flower beds, roses and gladiolus being her favorites.  In Kelowna, Mom and Dad added many fruit trees to their backyard as well as 2 chestnut trees and grape vines.  Mom had a generous spirit and always shared the bounty from her garden with neighbours and friends.  We will miss the special birthday and Christmas cards that came for each and every one of us, without fail, and that we all knew would end only with Mom and Dad’s passing.

A Funeral Service will be held with Father Pat Monette officiating.  The service will be for the immediate family only, given COVID restrictions.  Interment to follow at St. Theresa’s Cemetery.  Livestream of the service can be viewed on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 10:00 am. (See below) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Red Cross, www.redcross.ca.
