We Remember

FREY, Carl Adolf

June 7, 1938 — June 23, 2026

Carl Frey was born on June 7, 1938, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on June 23, 2026, at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Chris (Tara) and Sabrina (Ian); his grandchildren, Lucas, Katherine, and Emily; his sister, Margery; and many nieces and nephews.

Carl grew up close to the land, and farm life shaped him in ways that stayed with him always. He never lost his love of the outdoors, and to him, there was always something satisfying about a day spent working on the house or yard. He built his own house with his own two hands, a point of pride that spoke to who he was: practical and capable.

As a young man, Carl left the family farm in Saskatchewan for the big city, where he met and married his wife of 63 years at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. While at one point, Carl dreamed of becoming a pilot, his life took him down a different path. He spent much of his career as a welder fabricator in the Lower Mainland. Working for Finnings for 30+ years, he made many friends and acquaintances along the way. He had a fine singing voice and spent many happy years as part of the choir at the German Alpen Club in Vancouver, though he could just as easily be found tinkering in his workshop, having long conversations with neighbours or in front of the television enjoying a good western.

Above all, Carl was known as a dedicated family man with an easygoing nature. He was patient, calm, and quick with a joke, a man who carried a great sense of humour through life and never took things too seriously. He loved a good conversation and was always ready for a friendly chat, the kind of person people simply gravitated toward. Fun-loving and warm, Carl made an impression on everyone, and he will be remembered fondly by those who had the pleasure of his company.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
