We Remember
GABOR, Karoly
October 16, 1936 — April 6, 2024
Our beloved “Karcsibacsi” “Karl” passed peacefully, while surrounded by family on April 6, 2024.
Karl was born to Ilona Kecskemeti and Karoly Gabor in Cegled, Hungary in 1936. Looking for a better life in Canada, Karl emigrated from Holland in 1956, voyaged by sea, and landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Pier 21. Making Calgary, AB home, Karl worked for Domtar Packaging for 15 years before realizing his dream to move to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. After his arrival, he started his own successful business. Our father lived out the principles of integrity and trust, valuing the significance of a handshake. He was widely respected and cherished for his hard work ethic and his inherent kindness.
Karl was a member of our local Hungarian community for many years, he passionately gave many hours to the ‘club’ and also served as a president of the Hungarian club. Karl lived a purposeful life; he made homemade wine and the “best” Hungarian sausage for his friends as a beloved hobby, he also loved to cook and entertain, and he enjoyed keeping his garden lush and the eggs farm fresh. Karl had a great love of dogs, owning several over his lifetime, and leaves behind his beloved “Lucky”
Karl will be missed and always remembered by Cristeta Pastorin Gabor, his beloved wife of 34 years. Holding his love and teachings in their hearts are his children, Theodore (Monica) and Anita; his grandchildren, Lisa Marie (Bronwen), Matthew Karl, and Karlie Anne (TJ); and great-grandchildren Acacia, Kyra (of Karlie & TJ). Karl’s brother, Tibor Gabor, and Tibor’s children, Tibor, Karoly, Mihaly, and Eva Gabor, along with Karl’s other brother, Laszlo Gabor, and Laszlo’s children, Gabriella and Viktoria Gabor, will continue to treasure the moments they shared with their brother/uncle. Karl’s parents, Ilona Kecskemeti and Karoly Gabor, are now re-united in heaven.
Husband, father, brother, uncle grandpa… You were so loved, and you will be eternally missed.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to your local SPCA.
