We Remember
GAUCHER, Leon
October 30, 1932 — February 6, 2026
Leon, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Kelowna General Hospital.
He was born on October 30, 1932, in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, one of nine children of Rose Alphe and Bertha Gaucher. From a young age, Leon was athletic and competitive, often returning from school sports days with an armful of ribbons. He especially loved hockey and baseball, and his skill on the field earned him an invitation to a Brooklyn Dodgers training camp. Later in life he enjoyed the occasional round of golf, remained a loyal Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, and cheered faithfully for the Montreal Canadiens.
As a teenager, Leon ran his own trap line and worked at the local grocery store to earn pocket money. He later joined his brother Willie working in Coderre, Saskatchewan, before being hired by a seismic crew exploring for oil—work that took him across the province and eventually to Rosetown where he met Eileen.
Leon built a long and successful sales career that began in Saskatoon. His work took the family to Swift Current and later to Regina, where they settled at 148 Daffodil Crescent. He cherished the friendships and memories formed with his dealers while travelling throughout Saskatchewan and parts of Manitoba and Alberta. After retiring, Leon and Eileen moved to Kelowna, BC, to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Family was at the centre of Leon’s life, and Eileen was his greatest love; there was nothing he wouldn’t do for her and his children. Leon was a role model to his children, kind and generous, and together with Eileen were wonderful parents. Leon devoted countless hours to coaching his sons’ minor hockey and baseball teams, and his daughter Leanne had him wrapped around her little finger. He took great pleasure in telling stories from his Saskatchewan upbringing, had a great sense of humour and enjoyed trying to get others to laugh.
Leon was a talented self-taught woodworker and handyman, and he could fix anything—except cars. He loved gardening, and with Eileen’s planning and his digging, they always kept a beautiful yard, even if the same plants were relocated more than once in a season.
Leon is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Eileen; his children Geoffrey (Barbara), Leanne (Paul), Rod, and Colin (Stacey); grandchildren Stephen (Erin), Bradley (Josee), and Aaron; step grandchildren Kelly (Stephen) and David; great-grandchildren Adrien, Marceline, Felix, and Estelle; step great-grandchildren Avery, Rhodes, and Charlotte; sisters Annette (Gary) Boyd and Lorraine (Terry) Woleschuk; and many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed.
At Leon’s request, no funeral will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
