We Remember
GILLARD, Douglas Raymond
—
1936 – 2025
Douglas Raymond Gillard passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones in Kelowna, BC, on July 29, 2025, at age 89. He was born on his grandfather’s farm near Wynyard, SK. This quarter section stayed in the family for 113 years. The family moved to North Battleford, SK, where he graduated high school from North Battleford Collegiate Institute. He went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining a Bachelor of Science – Mechanical Engineering degree in 1958.
He then moved to Regina, SK, where he met his wife and began a 25-year career as a provincial civil servant in the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources before moving on to the private sector as a consultant in the oil and gas industry.
Dad enjoyed spending time with his family and getting together with his friends for their weekly “meeting” at the pub. Summer pastimes included fastball and golf. Winters were spent curling, and he often returned with all manner of trophies and treasure. Many weekends and holidays were spent working at the family farm in Earl Grey. At the age of 73, Douglas took up woodworking and built (by himself) a large garage and shop to accommodate his new hobby. In 2022, he and his wife sold the house they had lived in for 59 years and moved to Kelowna, BC to be closer to family. He had come a long way from his roots in Wynyard, North Battleford and Regina.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Naida (née Wicks); his children John (Catherine), Susan (Bernard), and Paul (Christina); granddaughters Michelle (Zane), Laura (Matthew), Molly, and Elizabeth; great–granddaughter Aida; nephew Darryl (Gail); and sisters Glenda and Connie.
He wished that everyone could have known his family, of which he was so proud.
A family gathering will be held at a later date.
