We Remember

GOTTSCHLING, George

George Gottschling passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at the age of 95. George was born in Pabianice, Poland on November 14, 1926 and immigrated to Canada in 1949.

George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gisela, in 2016, with whom he enjoyed 66 years of marriage. George was the much loved father of Ingrid, Karen (Gerry), and Armin (Helena); the loving Opa to Travis (Stephanie), Ryan (Susan), Danika (Dale), Carson (Lisa), and Matthew.  George was blessed with sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren – what a legacy!!  He also leaves behind sisters Hede (Benno) Schultz and Lily Kriese in Vancouver; brother-in-law Dietmar Schwarz in Germany and sister-in-law Eleanor Schwarz in Winnipeg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

George was happiest being a gentleman farmer.  He retired early from being a bricklayer and land developer to devote himself to this role.  One of his passions was growing tomatoes and other vegetables as well as raising livestock. He recalled with fondness a fishing trip to the Queen Charlotte’s in his 80’s with his son, son-in-law and grandson.  Dad enjoyed music – he played the piano and sang in church choirs well into his 80’s.  George was a generous dad and had much joy in visits from his great-grandchildren in his later years.  He will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, 1150 Glenmore Drive, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 4P3 or to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 235 Yorkland Blvd. Suite 600, Toronto, ON, M2J 4Y8.

A Memorial Service will be held, to celebrate George’s life, on Thursday, September 29, 2022, 10:30 AM, at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.

Condolences

  • Bob and Cherry Affleck says:

Karen we are thinking of you in the transition of your father to his heavenly home at this time. His absence from his earthly home will leave a large vacuum that ebbs and flows as time goes on. George touched many lives and we enjoyed our visits your way when we were able to meet and get to know him, hear his interesting stories and realize how loved and cared for he was by his “children”. We know his passage will leave a large void in your lives. May God bless you with grace and strength as you think of the happy memories with him.

  • Len and Wendy Youzwyshyn says:

  • Manfred Lottes says:

He was tall and strong when I first met him 53 years ago, and I would never have called him George back then. Even though I’ve been together with him recently I still remember him that way. A good man, my condolences to his loved ones.

  • Sam Port says:

My thoughts and feelings are with my old highschool pals Armin and Helena. I am so sorry that you’ve lost your father Armin. I met your dad once when I visited your place and I remember he loved life and he also loved the Okanagan. I’m glad to have met him briefly and I always saw his influence on you.
    Sincerely,
Sam Port MSW, RSW, Department of Outpatient Psychiatry, UAH Edmonton
