We Remember

Gratton, Mary

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

Mary went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2012 at the age of 81. She is survived by her daughters Janet (Wes) Lightfoot of Vernon, BC, Lynn (Stephen) Kratzer of Kelowna, BC; grandchildren Warren (Courtney) Lightfoot of Armstrong, BC, Theresa (Blake) Ransom of Red Deer, AB, Shane Lightfoot of Calgary, AB, Jarrett Kratzer (Ashley Welder) of Kelowna, BC, Stephanie Kratzer (Joe Garrison) of Kelowna, BC; great grandchildren Wade Lightfoot and Vanden Ransom. Sadly predeceased by her loving husband David Gratton (2009) and brother John Voytila (2010). Mary was born in Kenaston, SK and grew up in Watson, SK on the family farm. Her parents had emigrated from Slovakia with her older brother John. She also met David Gratton, her future husband in her school years in Watson. They were married in 1953 and lived in Atikokan, ON where daughters Janet and Lynn were born. Mary began her working career in Atikokan first at Steep Rock Mines Office and then the Bank of Commerce. In 1969 the black flies and mosquitoes convinced the family to pull up roots and move to Kelowna. Mary was a highly respected member of the Bank of Montreal in Kelowna for 20 years. In the mid 70’s Mary, Dave and her brother John Voytila took up golf which became a favorite activity in the summer at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club. Mary lived her life as a strong individual working woman before it became mainstream. She adored her family and was proud of their accomplishments. Her grandchildren lit up her life and sewing for them was a hobby she loved to do. In her last few years she suffered the indignity of Alzheimer. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation for the love and care the staff at Springvalley Care facility provided to “mom” the last few years. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada – Research Department, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 1200, Toronto, ON M4R 1K8.

I just want to express my sincere condolences to the family. I met Mary and Dave Gratton 43 years ago at their home when I accompanied a friend of Janet’s. Mary was always friendly towards me. Mary understood people and believed in people. Mary was the only person, nice enough to give a young man and his wife a loan for our first car. I have always had a lot of respect for Mary Gratton and her family and I am sorry to hear of her passing.
