We Remember
HAMM, Georgina Pearl
March 16, 1946 — December 25, 2014
Gina passed away peacefully on Christmas day in the presence of her loving husband of 46 years, Len and their son Ray. Throughout her illness and even in her final days, she showed grace, humour, love, generosity and cheerfulness that exemplified how she lived her life. Gina was born in Prince Rupert, BC the eldest child of Gordon Hartwell Brochu and Emma Hamer. She was forced to grow up quickly when her father died unexpectedly in 1959. As was Gina’s nature, she pitched in to help her mother with the two youngest children who were under the age of 5, forever cementing a place in their hearts as a second mother rather than an older sister. Shortly after her father’s passing, the family moved to Penticton, BC for 6 years before moving on to her mother’s hometown of Terrace, BC. It was there, while they were working at Super-Valu (she was the girl at checkout #3), that Gina met Len in 1967. A year later they married and spent their first 4 years in the Lower Mainland. The business of selling groceries took them to Whitehorse, Quesnel and Westbank. In retirement they moved to Victoria for a year but Gina yearned to return home so, in September of this year, they moved to Kelowna. Shortly thereafter she was diagnosed with an inoperable tumour.
Gina was predeceased by her mother in January 2014. She is survived by husband, Len; children: Yvette Hamm (Tory Thompson) and Ray Hamm; grandsons: Spencer Kelly and Rhys Hamm and siblings: Gordon, Alvin (Christine) and Denise Brochu (Arlena Dodd) and numerous nieces and nephews. Gina was always a good listener and loved to hear about what was happening in the lives of those she cared about. She was kind and compassionate and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Spending time with her inspired one to become a better person. She will leave a huge void in the lives she touched.
Many thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Lewke, the physicians and staff at Kelowna General Hospital and the staff and volunteers at Central Okanagan Hospice House for their compassion.
A Celebration of Gina’s life will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna on March 29, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Gina was a very compassionate person who didn’t like to see others in need. It wasn’t uncommon for her to give all her cash on hand to a homeless person. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in Gina’s name to The Salvation Army www.salvationarmy.ca/ or Kelowna Gospel Mission, kelownagospelmission.ca/

What a shock. Working with Gina at EF was an honor. The sweetest, genuine , kindess, most thoughtful lady you could ever have met. Even leaving EF if Gina was working I made sure I went through her til. Everyday I worked with her was everyday I left there thinking what a great day because she was just that sort of a person if you were down, or in a bad mood you didn’t stay there long. She never judged and always listened , I loved her for that quality. I am going to miss her, it saddens me she passed. A great woman she was.
