We Remember

HAMMOND, John Terrence “Terry”

It is with deep sadness we announce that Terry passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 28, 2023, at the Central Okanagan Hospice House.  In the days leading up to this, he was surrounded by his loving family.

Terry was born December 28, 1942, in Moose Jaw, SK, to Les and Vivian Hammond. He attended Teacher’s College in Regina where he met his true love and future wife, Shirley Adrian.  They married in 1963 and had two sons Scott and Todd.  Terry attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where he attained two degrees. Terry’s teaching career spanned 33 years, including time in Saskatchewan, North Vancouver, BC, and Germany with the Department of National Defense where the family spent three years living overseas.  After officially retiring he worked for the Kelowna Courier’s Kids Page, further enjoying his love of teaching.  He also taught at Sylvan Learning Centre.

Terry is survived by Shirley his loving wife of 60 years; sons Scott (Blaire), and Todd (Debbie); along with three grandchildren whom he adored; his brother Garth, sister Diane and their families; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and all of his wife’s family.

At Terry’s request, there will be no funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice House, or a charity of your choice.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Terry will forever be remembered for his wonderful smile, kindness, and generosity. He was a truly loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

The family would like to express gratitude for the many kindnesses evidenced in thought and deed.  They would also like to thank all the kind and gentle doctors, nurses, and other care workers who looked after Terry at Kelowna General Hospital and the Central Okanagan Hospice House.  Special thanks to Dr. Rosalie Swart.

I am so very glad to have met Terry and will be thinking of your family during this time. Sending you a big hug Shirley.
    Sincerely, Mandy Wedel
