We Remember
HARTSHORN, Ellen Mae Noreen
October 31, 1934 — December 14, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Ellen Mae Hartshorn, who passed away at Kelowna General Hospital on December 14th, 2024, at the age of 90.
Ellen was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta and lived there for many years. In 1966, Ellen and her husband Graham moved to Victoria, BC with their 3 children, Noreen, Trent, and Monica. They moved to several places in BC during the years while Graham worked for the Provincial Government.
Ellen made lots of friends along the way and always got involved with the church in each city they lived. Ellen also worked part-time throughout the years and was a wonderful mother.
Graham passed away in 2007, and in 2014, Ellen moved to Kelowna, BC, where two of her children lived as she needed more support at that time. She enjoyed her time with her children and made many connections at Dorchester Retirement Home and Summerwood. Eventually in 2022, due to failing health, she had to move to Brookhaven Care Home. Ellen regained enough strength to go out independently, often using Handi-Dart to get around. She especially enjoyed playing Bingo at the West Kelowna Legion and occasionally visiting the mall or the casino. She loved being around people, cherishing the opportunity to socialize and have meaningful conversations.
Ellen was predeceased by Graham (d. 2007) and survived by her 3 children Noreen, Trent, and Monica; 2 sons-in-law Ken and Vic; 3 grandchildren Julie, Sarah, and Tyler; and 7 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her 2 surviving brothers Bob & Jack, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ellen will be greatly missed by us all.
We would like to thank all her caregivers, nurses, and staff at Brookhaven and her wonderful friend Ailene from Kelowna Hospice House, who came every week for an afternoon to play cards with our Mom. She truly enjoyed a good card game!!
A Memorial Service in Ellen’s honour will be held on SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2025, at 3:30 PM (PDT), located at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Ellen Mae was a wonderful and skilled lady. Gram Giles often reminisced on her many wins for great baking, and I sure remember the thrill of birthday “ money cake” she made! We cousins enjoyed visits and great family picnics in Cypress Hills. I was glad aunty was close for those times in summer we spent in Prince George. Sending loving sympathy and warm thoughts to all of you.
Heartfelt condolences to you all Noreen, Trent, and Monica, What a void your dear Mom’s passing will leave in your lives. She will be deeply missed and I’m sure you will all cherish your good memories of her forever. I recall enjoying her cheerful nature and generous hospitality at meals in your Victoria homes with my Mom and Dad and Joan and Don. What a lovely picture of your Mom you have chosen for her obituary. Your Christmas season will be particularly poignant, but we hope you can all love and support one another while feeling your loss. loving hugs all round, Fran Young (Sands)
