We Remember

HASS, Marianne

January 17, 1938 — October 1, 2024

On October 1, 2024, Marianne Hass passed away in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 86.  God took her to her heavenly home after an afternoon of one of her favourite activities – playing Scrabble with her family.

She is survived by her son Ralph (Darlene); grandchildren Ashley (Nate), Justin (Shay), and Jordan (Andrea); great-grandchildren Barrett, Madison, and Kenzie; lifelong friend Alice Moeck; and close friend Gisella Stein.  She was predeceased by her husband Emil (d. 2011), and son David (d. 2009).

Marianne was born in Germany and immigrated to Canada in the late 1950s, settling in Kitchener, ON, before moving to Calgary, AB, where she met Emil. They married in August 1963 and grew in their relationship for 48 years, supporting each other and family in both good and challenging circumstances.

In 1972, Marianne and Emil relocated to the Okanagan Valley, where they raised their two sons, Ralph and David. Marianne was a devoted mother who cherished her family (including in Germany) above all else. She also found joy in gardening, playing card games and Scrabble with friends, playing the piano, attending church and symphony concerts, and watching “Wheel Of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”.

Marianne loved to bake and delighted her grandchildren with her apple pancakes and chocolate chip cookies. She had a love for travel and travelled to France on her own.

Marianne was a gentle spirit, known for her kindness and appreciation for others. She was a dedicated member of her church community, which started with First Lutheran Church and later, Trinity Baptist, where she played with the handbell choir.

An avid lover of the beach, she enjoyed picnics with her family and friends, celebrating life’s simple pleasures. Her legacy of love, strength in Jesus, and joy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

The family wishes to thank family physician, Dr. Alden Lange, and eye surgeon, Dr. Wendy Ming, for their care and concern. Also, Mission Creek Landing (long-term care) for their compassionate care since March of this year, and Orchard Gardens for their friendly community that Marianne was connected with for the previous six years.

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Meldon Lutzer officiating, at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna, BC.
