We Remember

HEDGES, William Darrell “Bill”

August 16, 1942 — August 12, 2024

It is with great sadness and a profound love that we announce the loss of William Darrell Hedges, who passed away on August 12, 2024, just days before his 82nd birthday.

Left to hold him dear to their hearts are those he loved most, including his beloved wife of 56 years, Anne Hedges; daughter Christine Hedges-Sortais (Steven Sortais); grandchildren Jonathan and William; brother Richard “Guy” Hedges (Patricia); niece Suzanne (Dave) Wheelhouse; niece Jacqueline (Eddie) Taylor, and grandnieces Gabrielle, and Rebecca Taylor. Bill now goes to join his parents, Albert and Ethel Hedges, who passed before him.

Bill was born in Scarborough, England, on August 16, 1942, and grew up in North Yorkshire, England, where his parents originated from. Bill was a hard worker from the get-go and was very successful throughout his life. He attended post-secondary school at Askham Bryan College in York, England, and then began his career in Agriculture. When Bill was not busy working or farming, he could be found enjoying his garden, playing a game of crib, reading a good book, watching western TV shows, or Coronation Street — that is, of course, after a cold beer to reward his hard work. Although Bill was always eager to see the world, he never forgot where he came from, and loved his English roots.

A people person to the core, Bill loved to talk and connect with everyone he came across. He was polite, strong, and fair, and would always introduce himself with a handshake. Bill made friends easily, whether it was on a casual walk, or after popping into the casino, Bill always made new connections with his magnetic presence and sense of humour.

Above all, Bill had a great love for his family and those he held close. He adored his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and his dog, who was a constant companion. Bill will be missed by all whose lives he touched, and will never be forgotten.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, family and friends will honour him, each in their own way; no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bill’s honour to the BC Cancer Society or the Central Okanagan Hospice House.

Condolences

  • Joyce & Jim Jackson says:

What a great picture of a really fine man. As you say a very friendly and helpful guy. He helped me meet the folks at the cribbage night and made me feel right at home. A fine neighbor and we shared the love of Dogs – we had the same looking Border Collies when we moved onto the street. We stopped and chatted whenever it was dog walking time. RIP Bill

  • Hugh Philip says:

My sincerest condolences on the passing of Bill. I very much appreciated the time we shared as co-workers in the Department of Agriculture. I valued his work ethic and his willingness to tackle any task to help our projects move forward. Whenever I hear the expression “If you know what I mean”, I’ll always fondly think of Bill.

  • Lynette McMechan says:

Over 30 years we were neighbours, friends, family. What a gift Bill was to us! He with be greatly missed and remembered every crib night. Love you!
