Pauline was born on January 10, 1921 in Springside, Saskatchewan and passed away on January 1, 2014 in Kelowna, BC. Pauline was the fourth of seven girls born to Sandy and Magdelina Shewchuk, who were both born in Austria.
In her youth, Pauline worked as a waitress. On August 8, 1945, Pauline married William Gardner and on October 14, 1953 their son Richard was born. Pauline became an interior designer and supervised the building of several houses per year. Sadly this marriage ended in divorce. Rudy Hein was doing a lot of construction work for her at this time, so after the divorce, the two of them started a friendship which blossomed into marriage on July 25, 1970. After getting married, they lived in Vancouver for many years, moved to Kelowna for a short time, where they built duplexes in Rutland. Then they moved to White Rock for some time and then to Westbank, where they built their present house 15 years ago.
Pauline enjoyed getting together with friends and family. She was a good hostess and a good cook. Pauline and Rudy frequently went south for the winters, first to Mexico and later to Arizona. Here they had good times each year with the same friends.
Pauline’s health deteriorated six years ago and got progressively worse, so that she has been bed-ridden for the last two and a half years. She was admitted to the Central Okanagan Hospice House on December 17th and died New Year’s Day.
Pauline is survived by her loving husband Rudy; son Richard; sister Helen; two brothers-in-law: Emil (Edda) Hein and Reinhold Klinger; a sister-in-law Linda Melcher; plus nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and five sisters: Mary, Nancy, Anne, Kay and Eilene.

Rudy & family – Mike and I were saddened to learn of Pauline’s passing. We remember her so well for her meals and best of all her awesome fresh vegetables that she would bring to us. She was a wonderful lady and neighbor. We apologize for not being at her service but we are presently in Arizona. Please know that our thoughts are with you.
