We Remember

HICKEY, Desmond Patrick

Desmond or “Captain Des” as many knew him passed away on August 1, 2019, surrounded by family, at the age of 84. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; daughter Sherry (Mike) and son Rowan (Robyn); and his grandchildren Hailey, Scott, Brandon, Megan, Kealan, Sheamus, Andrew, and Nathan; great grandchildren Taegan and Talan; and his sister, Eileen. He was sadly predeceased by his daughter, Wendy.

Desomond was born in Montreal, QC. As a young man he made his way to Kelowna, BC to work at the Simpson Sawmill. For the majority of his career he was the tugboat operator on Okanagan Lake. Despite his 35 years on the lake he never saw the elusive Ogopogo.

He met and married (in 1972) the love of his life, Carol, becoming an instant dad to Wendy, Sherry, and Rowan. Throughout their lives together they were all about family. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was quite a storyteller.

In his younger years he would “cut a rug” on the dance floor, he was always on the social committees planning the parties. Lately you could find Des sitting on his deck soaking up the sun, spending time watching the squirrels, birds and hummingbirds.

A private family service will be held for Desmond. He loved whiskey and animals, so in lieu of flowers, send memorial donations to the SPCA, spca.bc.ca, and next time you have a whiskey raise your glass to Captain Des.
