We Remember
HIRTZ, Doreen Yvonne (née Swartz)
March 8, 1932 — December 23, 2024
Doreen Yvonne Hirtz (née Swartz), born on March 8, 1932, in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at the age of 92. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Doreen leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and adventure. She was the beloved wife of the late Percy Hirtz; mother to Sharon (Brad), Rob (Donalyn), and Barry (Kathleen); grandmother to eight; and great-grandmother to four. Known for her focused competitive spirit, Doreen excelled as a nurse, a homemaker, and a friend to many. Her adventurous nature carried her from the prairies of Saskatchewan to travels around the world, while her warm heart and boundless energy brought joy and comfort to all who knew her.
A Life of Determination and Service
Doreen’s journey began on the family farm in Kelvington, where she grew up surrounded by her brother, sister, and a number of work hands. A self-proclaimed tomboy, she spent her childhood riding horses, playing baseball, and even mastering motorcycle riding. Her thirst for knowledge and self-improvement led her to complete high school in Kelvington and pursue a nursing career at the Regina Grey Nuns, where she graduated as the youngest in her class and also near the top of her class.
Her nursing career took her across Saskatchewan, but it was in Meadow Lake that she met Dad, who would become her life partner. After a year of long-distance courtship, they married on July 31, 1956, embarking on a life of adventure and hard work together.
The newlyweds settled in Fort St. John, building a life where Mom worked at the hospital and supported the family farm. She embraced motherhood with the birth of Sharon in 1958, followed by Rob in 1962 and Barry in 1964. Despite the demands of raising a young family, Mom also contributed to the family business, Hirtz Brothers Construction, and hosted boarders in their home for additional income.
A talented curler, Mom participated in numerous bonspiels and earned her share of trophies, reflecting her competitive spirit and love for the sport.
A New Chapter in Kelowna
In 1974, the family relocated to Kelowna, where Mom faced new challenges as Dad’s work often took him away from home. She raised three teenagers, volunteered for school and community activities. After the children became more responsible, Mom and Dad loved to travel and golf with their many friends.
After Dad’s passing, Mom moved to Sun Village, where she became a vibrant part of the community. She cultivated friendships, learned bridge, and participated in garden projects, all while continuing her lifelong love of travel, visiting destinations such as China, Japan, Europe, and Alaska.
Mom found great happiness in the 15 years she spent at Sun Village, and later during her seven years at Westwood. At both places, she built lasting friendships and cherished the sense of community. Her time at Westwood was especially enriched by the outstanding care and support of the staff, who helped make her final years meaningful and full of love.
A Legacy of Love and Resilience
Mom’s greatest joy was her family. She was a pillar of strength and warmth, always ready with a helping hand or a word of encouragement. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, determination, and an adventurous spirit.
Doreen will be dearly missed, but forever cherished by her family and friends.
