We Remember
Hovey, Lester (Les)
January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970
Passed away peacefully 23 May 2012 at the Spring Valley Care home in Kelowna, BC. Les was born in 1922 in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, a small settlement south of Saskatoon. His parents were pioneers. His mother’s family had travelled from Ottawa and his father’s from Iowa and Minnesota to set up homesteads during Saskatchewan’s Dominion Lands rush in the early 1900’s. Les grew up with his 4 siblings (Charlie, Vera, Yvonne, and Allan) on a farm near Pike Lake, SK during the Great Depression where he learned the values of perseverance, hard work and endurance. He joined the RCAF to serve his country in World War II. During that time, Les’ family moved to Burnaby where he joined them after the war ended. Les would say his greatest achievement was meeting and marrying his partner Georgina (Georgie). They met at a dance and married a few years later in 1951. Georgie was a young entrepreneur and had started a business called “Burnaby Dry Cleaners”. Les joined her as a partner and together they formed a very successful team in business and life. At the age of 47, Les and his wife sold their business and moved to Kelowna in 1967. Les was too keen and active to retire. In Kelowna he spent his time doing maintenance jobs for dry cleaners throughout the Okanagan. He also loved doing carpentry work for friends and family. Les loved living in the Okanagan where he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and especially golf. He was a dedicated family man. Les lost his beloved Georgina in 2004, but is survived by his three sons Gary, Frederick, and Richard, his daughters in-law Rita and Joanne, his grandchildren Geanna, Lindsey and Brooke, and his brother Allan. Les was a soft spoken soul who was always willing to help and he will be dearly missed by those who knew him. A Celebration of Lester’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to BC Heart & Stroke Foundation, #4 – 1551 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9.

We would like to send our love and support to you at this sad and difficult time. We will miss Les. All of you are in our prayers.
I had the pleasure of meeting this quiet and sweet man at SVCC where I work casually as a practical nurse. He will be missed by all.
Gary, Rick, Fred and family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your dad.
An angel whispered to your dad, take my hand and come with me your work here is done. He went away to a place where there are no tears, no sorrow, only laughter and smiles, there will always be tomorrow.
I will always have my special memories and keep him in my heart.
Much love to all at this time.
Debbie Loraas
Gary and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers
With my sincere condolences & sympathy to the Hovey family.I recall fondly the Hovey family from my days living in Burnaby and playing on the back alley with the Hovey boys. I remember both Mr. [Lester] & Mrs. [Georgina] Hovey as being exceptional people, especially dealing with a yard full of little boys.Their business,Burnaby Cleaners, sponsored the little league team I played on. My thoughts are with the family. Jim Edmondson masimmons@shaw.ca
