We Remember
HOWARD, Clyde James
—
Father, teacher, coach, mentor, friend, the crotchety old guy barking over the fence at you for not wearing a bicycle helmet. Clyde took his coaching to a whole new level on April 30th. He will be remembered. Born in Vancouver and raised in Kitimat, Clyde studied at UVIC and took a teaching position with School District 23 at the tender age of 20. He taught Social Studies and P.E. and the leadership program with passion. His passion extended to coaching several sports. His fondest memory as a coach was being able to coach his daughter Chynna in high school and winning a provincial club championship with her. Although Clyde will mostly be remembered as Coach Howard or Captain Canada his proudest title comes from Chynna: “The Best Dad In The World.” Predeceased by his parents Bob and Violet, Clyde is survived by his daughter Chynna and four sisters, Melanie, Jay, Nadine and Sherri. A Celebration of Clyde’s Life will be held on Tuesday July 1st at 5:30 pm at the Unitarian Fellowship of Kelowna, 1310 Bertram St. Kelowna. For those wishing to send a condolence, photos or share memories, may do so by scrolling down this page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

Clyde was a pivotal person in my life. He was my Intramural leader and listened to my troubles as a teenager. He was my mentor when I first started teaching at KSS and always offered his ‘chill out’ advice when I was stressed. We had some great visits this last year and I will really miss him.
Dear Chynna, I’m so sorry, and I’m still in shock thinking about him. I’ve been staring at the daffodils growing and fading and all I can think about was how vital Clyde was this past year that we reconnected. You were the light of his life and I know he let you know that and everyone else too, all the time. What a fine man, and wonderful dad. He had a huge impact on so many through his teaching and coaching days, and I’m so glad I got to know him again as a friend after being my teacher. What a guy. Loved you, his flowers, his Molly, Dippy and his many, many personal friends. Big hugs to you and please let me know if I can help you with anything. All my best, enjoy the sunshine from above Clyde!
My deepest condolences to Mr. Howards family. He was my teacher in grade 8 at KSS. We had a talk outside the class room about my brothers death that has stuck with me till this day. He really understood his students and pushed us to be the best we could be. I’m so sorry for your loss, he was a remarkable man that left a lasting impression. RIP Mr. Howard…..I will always remember you saying sternly “get to class”
Clyde came to one of my house parties during first year at UVIC. Big crowd from Kitimat. It was conveniently held while I was out of town. Clyde apparently really enjoyed himself from all reports. The cops were unsuccessful in shutting it down. The landlady tore a strip off me and the Victoria Times/Colonist ran a story on it. I sure regret missing it. But there were other good memories.
My sympathies to Clyde’s family. We lost a good one.
Im so very sorry to all of the Howard Ladies on your loss of Clyde. Cherish your memories.
Clyde will be missed. I was always happy when I was lucky enough to work in his classroom. A special guy…
Mr Howard was an icon at KSS. My condolences to his Family. Chynna how fortunate you were to have a Dad that absolutely adored you and will now watch over you from above.

Clyde will be missed by all of us who grew up in Kitimat. We reconnected at our 40th school reunion in Kelowna as he was getting ready to retire and enjoy life. My deepest sympathy to his family, especially Chynna.
I had Mr. Howard as a volleyball coach at KSS, still have the quote he gave our team. What the mind can believe the mind can achieve. Sorry for you loss.
Best Volleyball coach ever!
I met Clyde later in his life as a friend. I knew from all the comments I heard that he was loved as a teacher, coach, friend, and most of all, father. He was a great person and I will miss him. His love of all things Canada still resonates with me. Love you Clydester.
The loss of a very fine man.
About 8 years ago, I had the opportunity to do a special favor for Clyde, and not only was he kind enough to say thanks repeatedly that day, he also said thanks to me every single time I ran into him between then and now – he never forgot! Rest easy Clyde.
Dear Chynna,
Teaching across the hall from your father for 15 years was always an adventure. Helping him to catch the biggest trout ever on the Shuswap lake an even bigger adventure. He was a true Canadian, a great coach and collegue. We will really miss him on our fishing trips.
Sam Saprunoff
Clyde thanks from the thousands and thousands of students and staff that you impacted with your Intramural / leadership and coaching programs. They were the very best!
How about our Seahawk trips? How about the poker parties and staff fishing trips? How about the ‘Business Men’s wild cow riding at Black Mt. rodeo? Thanks for the memories. Thanks to a good man.
Glad that we could reconnect last month. To his family and friends – many condolences.
My sincere condolences to the family. Mr Howard was one of the best teachers I ever had!!
Chynna I am so sorry for your loss and can only say the hurting will subside. I just wanted to let you know that your father was one of those kind of guys that made other people better people. I know it sounds corny but as I sit and reflect on the many times your dad has quietly pointed out the way to be. Thanks Clyde it is with pride I say I knew you good by
“We cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see. But all is well when done by Thee. We know the change is for the best. He is with Thee. He is at rest.” (from my father, James Bain’s Memorial card.)
Dearest Chynna!
There are no words to express how sad we are to hear of the passing of your wonderful Dad…so many wonderful memories from elementary school where he was always there to pick you up and chatting with us moms and all the soccer games!!! He will be missed…may God give you and your family strength, love and peace…xoxoxo…Kathy, Luba, Kelsey, Robbie and family Marinov
My condolences to the family. Mr Howard had taught and coached me and my older siblings and was a family friend of my parents. I swear he was the only one teacher that could make Canadian history so amazing and make me feel this proud to be Canadian!
Chynna, I’m so sorry for your loss. Clyde impacted so many lives. He will be truly missed.
Clyde and I reconnected last year at the BC Cancer Agency garage sale. I was his neighbour back in the days he lived on Glenwood and I was on Cadder, across the back fence! Chynna was just a wee girl back then.Sorry to the family for your loss. He’s up with the angels now….
Sorry to hear of your loss Chynna. Clyde and the guys taught me how to play volleyball up at East Kelowna Hall and he was always good for a laugh afterward over a beer. We all loved his “matter of fact” approach to life. We’re lucky to have known him. He’ll be missed huge.
Chynna – I remember fondly the Volleyball trip to Cuba with your Dad and you! He was in his element and he treasured in his heart that he could share that with you. You were the sparkle in his eye, and you always will be. As he treasured you everyday you get to treasure the memories of a great dad. Missed but not forgotten!
Chynna, I am so sorry for your loss…
Playing Volleyball with you and your dad in highschool are some of my best memories. Especially the trip to White Rock…
Mr. Howard will always be fondly remembered as one of my greatest mentors growing up. Thanks to his dedication & passion to the sport of volleyball he helped many, including me, enjoy the sport and make many long lasting memories. I was happy to be in touch with Mr. Howard this past year and his loss will be felt among many in our community. Sending the family strength during this difficult time.
I am so sorry Chynna, for the loss of your dad. I met you when you were just a really young girl, cute as a button I might add. I was in the Travel and Tourism course with your mom.
“Life is not forever… love is”
I was saddened to hear of Clyde’s passing. I had the privilege of working with him at K.S.S. many years ago. They were great days and Clyde was so energetic and conscientious. I later had the opportunity of working with him as a parent when Chynna was a student at Pearson Road. Every meeting was a treat.
My best wishes to Chynna and the rest of the family. You were blessed with one of the great dads.
We are now living in Ontario, but my spirit will definitely be with you on Tuesday.
With great memories.
Cyril
