We Remember

ILNICZKY, Anna Maria

February 19, 1945 — October 7, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Anna Maria Ilniczky, who left us peacefully in Kelowna, BC, Canada, at the age of 79, surrounded by her family after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer.

She is lovingly remembered by those she held dearest: her devoted husband, Dr. Alberto Azzi; her beloved daughter, Veronika, and cherished son-in-law, Richard; her adored grandchildren, Maximilian and Lucas; her brother, Iván (Éva); her niece, Franciska; and her grand-dog, Daisy. Anna Maria also leaves behind many extended family members in Hungary and Italy.

She now joins her mother, grandparents, aunts, and her first husband (the father of her daughter) who passed before her.

Born in Hungary at the tail end of the war, Anna Maria grew up in and around Budapest, immersing herself in the rich culture the city had to offer. In her youth, she was an accomplished athlete, embodying a remarkable sense of determination and resourcefulness. Her intelligence and dedication led her to earn a PhD in Economics, and she spent many years working in Budapest, relishing the opportunity to visit countries across multiple continents.

After marrying Alberto, she and her daughter moved to Trentino, Italy, to join him. She was truly captivated by the beauty of the Dolomites, where she enjoyed skiing, hiking, savouring good food, and embracing the warmth of the community. A few years later, the family moved to Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada and eventually settled in Kelowna.  There, Anna Maria found joy in tending to her garden, daily hikes up Knox Mountain, and weekly dances at various cultural centres in the city.

Strong-willed and generous, she was always eager to help others and gave freely to those in need. Anna Maria loved animals, travelled the world, and had a sweet spot for ice cream. Above all, her family was her greatest joy and priority, and she consistently put their needs above her own, leaving a legacy of love and selflessness.

She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her, leaving behind cherished memories of her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support. Her impact on those around her will be felt for years to come, and her absence will be profoundly mourned.

In keeping with Anna Maria’s kind and giving nature, in lieu of flowers, please consider performing a good deed in her honour.
