We Remember
JAMES, Norman Valentine
September 13, 1934 — May 16, 2016
Norman was born September 13, 1934 in Saskatoon, SK. He passed away on May 16, 2016 in Westbank, BC. Left to cherish memories are: his wife, Bernice; four children, Sherry (Fred) Cross, Barbara James, Jeffrey James, and Joanne (Andy) Neumann; nine grandchildren, Carolyn (Ryan) Harrison, Lindsay (Oscar) Sanchez, Robert (Tina) Cross, Michael Gaboury, Matthew (Jessica) Gaboury, Jessica James, Evan James, Andrea Neumann, and, Reid Neumann (Jen Christenson); four great grandchildren, Kaylee and Parker Harrison, Marco Sanchez, and Oliver Gaboury; two cousins, Cecil (Helen) Hopko and Gordon Hopko and their families; as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and friends.
He was predeceased by his first wife Jeannine, his parents Mary James and Dr. Norman Valentine James Sr., and his aunt Doris Hopko. Norm was a man who took his responsibilities seriously. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Both long time and new friends were much appreciated. As a thirty year veteran of the Edmonton Police Service, he never stopped being a proud part of that fraternity. In his leisure time he enjoyed music from folk to classical, as well as fishing, camping and travel. His interest in subjects from nature shows to boxing to sci-fi to current affairs made Norm a repository of a wide and varied range of information! Norm had a long and full life!

We were so sad to learn of Norm’s passing, but so happy that our last visit was such a good one. Norm was a terrific guy and a good friend. All our prayers to Bernice and family.
I never had a bad day when “Norm” was around. Carole Bea and I shared many happy days in his company during our off-duty hours. He was always there when needed during our time working together. He was always his “own man” and I still remember that with great fondness and respect. He was, good company and a great friend who will never be forgotten.
Norm was my first sergeant when I worked at EPS, and he was a wonderful man to work for. He was a great leader in an unassuming way – never rattled, fair, handed out as many compliments as criticisms, and encouraged everyone to be their best. He always had a smile and a hug for me, even years after I’d left EPS. Robin and I will remember him as a real gentleman and one who served his community with honour and dignity. Our sincere condolences to his family.
Joanne & Family:
We’re so very sorry for your loss. While we didn’t know him well, we heard so many wonderful things about him from all of you. We’re thinking of you during your time of sorrow & we’ll light a candle for him on June 18th. Take care.
Love,
Keith & Dolores
I was saddened to see the notice of Norm’s death. We were colleagues on the Edmonton Police Service for many years. When I first met him I believe he was working in the cell block and later we worked together in the Traffic Division. He was a respected police office: Please accept my condolences.
