We Remember

JARRETT, Anthony (Tony)

March 18, 1930 — August 23, 2017

Died peacefully on August 23, 2017 at the age of 87 surrounded by family and lifelong friend Hugh. Survived by his dear wife Ruth; children Kirsti (Roy), Ingrid, Roland (Emma) and Lisa (Terry); grandchildren Dylan, Sean, Emma, Amy, Hanna, Kari, Megan, Liam, Freya and Elliot; brother Michael (Rae); and sister Mary (Colin). Predeceased by his brother Dick (Irene). He will long be remembered by our extended family, the Hopkinsons, and many good friends. We will all miss his generosity of spirit, his optimism, his curiosity and zest for life and his wisdom. He loved the outdoors, sailing, skiing, bird watching, music, travelling, playing bridge, fishing, reading and good conversations. He was our “handy guy” and could fix anything. Skiing became a passion soon after his arrival in BC. In the 70’s the family VW van was regularly filled with his children and their friends on a slow trek to Big White; this was the start of becoming a role model to many of his children’s friends which is carried on in the memories of many. His lifelong love of sailing started as a young boy in England, continued in Kelowna racing his Fireball dinghy and culminated with many years sailing in the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia and the coast of BC. Tony spent many hours of his time at the Kelowna Yacht Club volunteering with the local sailing races. He was educated at Oxford after which he married Ruth, whom he met in Norway, came to BC and worked in the forest industry in the Cariboo, Golden, Revelstoke, the Lower Mainland, Kelowna and Kamloops. Our family is grateful to Dr. Michael Appleby for his care. Tony was deeply committed to supporting and thoroughly enjoyed the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Memorial donations may be made to the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, www.okanagansymphony.com/support.
A Celebration of Life for Tony will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at the Okanagan Mission Activity Centre, 4398 Hobson Road, Kelowna, from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. • Cal Engel says:

I first met Tony and Ruth when we wired their new house after the 03 fires. Tony had to be one of the most interesting guys I’ve had the privilege of knowing. He would occasionally stop by our shop to ask some question that I think he already knew the answer to, I think just to stop and chat. And he would always leave me with a smile on my face.
And that is why I know you’re going to miss him. My sincere sympathies to you all.

  • Colin Dunlop says:

Dear Jarrett Family, my sincere condolences for Mr. Jarretts passing (no matter how many times he said to call him Tony, he will always be Mr. Jarrett to me). So many good memories with your family!! .. I’ll never forget those rides up and down to the ski hill in the VW, Dad always spoke so highly of Mr Jarrett both as a friend and colleague.

  • Robert & Diana Anderson says:

    Dear Ruth and family,
Rob and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences over your loss. We too will miss his cheery personality. It was always a pleasure chatting with Tony in our office and him giving Rob a hard time if we didn’t have any current boating magazines in the office…especially Pacific Yachting. I swear the only reason he came to the office was to read these magazines. Farewell Sailor.
    Love,
    Diana & Rob

  • Tim & Marilyn Chapman says:

    Dear Ruth & Family,
Marilyn and I were saddened to hear of Tony”s passing. I believe the description of him in the obituary aptly captured my recollections of him with the eternal optimism, inquisitive interest in many things and knowing smile.
    He will be missed.
    Tim and Marilyn

  • Jamie Maw says:

    Dear Ingrid and Family Jarrett,
Your Dad’s extraordinary enthusiasm for life was deeply contagious, as was his support of many great causes in the Okanagan – especially the Symphony.
Although the effluxion of time might ease your pain, it can in no way erase his legacy.
Much love – Jamie + Yvonne Maw

  • Kathy and Bill Clark says:

    Dear Ruth and Family,
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to you on Tony’s passing. Our memory of Tony and his family will always stay with us. We had the pleasure of meeting Tony in 1996 in Mexico where we were all planning Pacific Ocean crossings. After our first dinner together Tony invited us back to his sailboat for a ‘night cap’. Long time memories were established when he offered us Cardhu Scotch with the phrase ‘no ice, no water’, served in wine glasses.

From Mexico to New Zealand we kept in close sailing contact with Dandelion Days and will remember Tony’s adventurous nature and love of a good conversation trying to solve the world’s problems.

After our arrivals in New Zealand some 7 months later our New Zealand family and Tony’s B.C. family got to know and enjoy each others company.

Rest in peace Tony, your friendship will always be treasured. Kath and Bill
