When we moved to Kelowna many years ago, 1982, after a chance meeting with Joan, Joan and Garth welcomed us with a friendship that became lifelong. With our extended families all back in Ontario we spent many a Christmas and holiday time with the Johnstone’s family feeling the warmth and love of being part of one big family. We shared many a ski day, social events, golf, and simply great and memorable times with Garth and Joan. Our children felt completely at home om their home and Garth got to know each of them as he and Joan shared their family life with them. When we left Kelowna we never lost touch, nor did Garth ever forget to ask and follow the lives of our children as they grew and had their own families. As we observed Garth extended his genuine love of life, family and people, and wonderful sense of humour to everyone he met. That friendship is treasured and will always be remembered,

Today while thinking about days gone by, I googled Garth’s name and found his obituary. It saddened me deeply. We forget that years get ahead of us even though we think of those that leave footprints on our hearts such as Garth did on mine, and his love for Joan and his children was beautiful. Years ago I worked for Garth at GWL. in Edmonton and he was the most amazing boss I ever had in my life. Often times I have thought of Garth and Joan and how they were doing in the Kelowna area. One year, while in BC , he welcomed us over to his home and it was so wonderful being in his presence again! While he lived in the Alberta area, we bought his hard top tent trailer the year Jim and I married (1980) and it was awesome having it for camping trips. His kindness was second to none and his love for Joan and his children was admirable. I am so saddened to learn of his passing, and while time slipped by before knowing of Garth’s passing, I send to all his family members, my heartfelt sympathies. I have missed Garth ever since I left GWL to start our family and have always wished we relocated to Kelowna, BC where he once had offered me my old position back. What an incredible good kind man Garth was. What an incredible loving man he was to his family, his loving wife, and as well his friends became extended family members.. His zest for life and laughter heard I will always, always recall. I will always be grateful that I had the privilege of working for Garth. I will not ever forget Garth’s kindness, not ever.
