Passed away on February 21, 2012 at the Hospice House surrounded by his family and friends at the age of 53. Survived by his loving wife of 26 years Regina, son Marco, parents Dick and Mieke, and two brothers. Sadly predeceased by one sister. Henk worked at and was co-owner of Rutland Physiotherapy for the last 24 years. A Celebration of Henk’s Life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 1:30 pm at Coast Capri Hotel, 1171 Harvey Ave., Kelowna, BC. Interment to follow in Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charity of your choice, Kelowna Food Bank or Hospice House.

How strange is this transient life and how mysterious the reason some are taken so young. The summer school of song is still in my heart and Owen and I will always remember Henk’s gentleness and radiance. He really exempified nobility and his goodness always shone through. I only met Henk 3 times, as a patient. Nevertheless, I recognized immediately that he was an exceptional human being: a man filled with light.
I was shocked and grieved to hear of his death. I will not forget him. “The light shines on, and the darkness will not extinguish it.”

I have such fond memories of Henk from the Sing for Joy music camp we attended in the summer of 2004. I will always remember Hen singing his heart out and Marco on the drums. Henk was always happy, encouraging and a delight to be with. It was a true blessing to have shared that time with him and Marco.
Sincere condolences to Regina and the family. Although our encounters with Henk were few, we were impressed with his knowledge and his devotion to the Faith. In his final illness he demonstrated eloquently how our passing into the next world should be managed. He will be missed.

Every once in awhile there is aperson as genuine as Henk, who has no pretense and truly connects with others. A Pure Soul some call them. I don’t know all I know is that he was a special person and though never in his actual presence for very long periods I felt we knew each other. I will always be grateful for the love and support he and Regina gave my Two Daughters (his nieces). Henk I doubt I am worthy to meet up with you on the next part of the journey but if Baha’u’llah wills it I surely hope we do.
Regina and Marco, our hearts go out to you at this time. We did not know Henk was ill so hearing of his passing came as quite a shock and brought a wave of sadness. We remember him and you so fondly after the time we shared together in China. Although we have not been in touch in recent times our memories of you have always remained vivid for us. Be assured of our prayers for the family and for Henk. He is such a special soul.
Apart from so many other wonderful virtues, it is Henk’s beautiful thankfulness, that we will remember and Henk’s courage and fortitude,too! We are so blessed and grateful we got to share time with you, together with Regina and Marco, along the path of friendship. Oh Henk you continue to lift us up into the Heavenly Realm with that love you shine so gently and that quiet thankfulness for all circumstances that your bright Soul is such an example of.
We will continue to pray for your journeying and for the journeying of your beloved Regina and Marco.

A wonderful man has left this world in the physical sense, but his strong and amazing spirit will stay with us forever. My Uncle Henk was a wonderful, kind, compassionate and loving man. I have so many fond memories of time spent in Winfield with Henk, Regina and Marco and I am so grateful to have had that. Henk was always someone so interested in life, so interested in people and he genuinely cared for those around him. I was lucky to have felt this in my lifetime and it’s something I will cherish always. I will never forget as a little girl my Uncle Henk showing me the Northern Lights for the first time. I’ve always remembered how beautiful it was, and every time I see photographs of the Aurora Borealis, I’ve always thought of him. I know that should I ever need to call on him, all I will need to do is look up at the sky as he will be watching over us all.

From Edmonton days to BC life, then meeting up again in China, all those years ago, was such a surprise.
Not realizing we left Canada at the same time to share our Faith, talents and friendship in China was a joy.
Learning of your hardships there but your perseverance through it all, impacted us to stay the course
as you two (three) were doing. Though not without its challenges and hardships, of course,
but we each soon realized there were many who were indeed Friends at heart.
Then finding ourselves crossing paths at Maxwell Int’l Baha’i School with our sons
attending there and becoming friends was such a treat too !
Henk was a spirit in this world that made others who befriended him realize that kindness, honesty,
loving friendship & caring for one-another was attainable because that was how he lived, how your
family lived.
I know we are better because Henk was part of our lives.
His counsel to me at a challenging time in my life brought a comfort that to this day I recall.
Though I don’t remember the exact words I do “feel” the peace he brought to the turmoil
of the situation. Such a gift to do that for another! A gift of a remarkable capacity
to bring comfort to others that I am grateful for.
He will remain always in our hearts as an example of someone we can aspire to be.
Henk was a person of integrity who gave of himself to help make this tired ‘ole world a better place
because he lived his life to his fullest, in spite of and because of his own challenges – an example for us all.
Yes, a life gone from us at too young and age,…
May his soul find comfort in the Abha Kingdom in the Blessed Beauty’s presence.
