We Remember

KANE, George D.

July 18, 1935 — January 1, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce that George Desmond Kane passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, in Kelowna, BC on January 1, 2023, at the age of 87. George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Fionnuala; his three children, Nicola, Robert, and Damian (Michelle); his three grandchildren, Conor, Joseph, and Harley. He was predeceased by his five siblings, John, Etta (Philips), Maurice, Walter, and Raymond. George was the youngest of six children born in Dublin, Ireland.

After marrying his love, Fionnuala, and with the birth of a daughter, his family immigrated to Saskatoon, SK in 1967. While in Saskatoon, a son was born. In 1970, the family moved to Edmonton, AB, where George worked as a typesetter for The Edmonton Journal. Their second son was born in Edmonton. In 1975, the family moved once again, settling in White Rock, BC to be closer to his sister Etta and family. George and Fionnuala retired to beautiful Kelowna, BC in 1994.

George was given a harmonica by his close friend, Michael Lawler, on his 21st birthday. He was self-taught and became an exceptional harmonica player. He played the background music on many TV and radio productions in Ireland. He played on the Radio Eireann with the symphony orchestra and performed many concerts while in Ireland. While living in White Rock, George travelled to the English Channel Islands (Jersey) to take place in an International Harmonica Competition, where he competed with world renowned artists. He returned home winning 8th Best Harmonica Player in the World. In Kelowna, George was also the proud winner of the Chartwell Senior Star Competition in 2012.

George was an avid golfer, being a member of Nico Wynd in Surrey, BC and Sunset Ranch Golf Club in Kelowna. He continued to play well into his retirement.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

The family sends sincere thanks to the care aides, nurses, and volunteers at The Village at Mill Creek who cared for George for the past two years.

We share memories of Uncle George’s visit to Dublin and I have great memories of fun, laughter and music in Milano and Sori. George’s impish smile, warmth and sense of fun are part of some special memories.

    Hi Fionuala,
The service at St. Pius was a beautiful service for a truly beautiful man. I am so sorry that George has left us but I’m sure he is with you every single moment of every single day. I’m thinking of you constantly and I will see you soon.
I’ll continue to think of George everyday as I pass the Petrocan on Glenmore, where I first met him.
    All my love.
