We Remember

KARYLCHUK, Michael Nestor
November 21, 1937 — June 10, 2024
Mike Karylchuk passed away surrounded by family on June 10, 2024, at the age of 86. He is survived by his children Donna (Les) Johnson, and Darra (Kurt) Bullach; grandchildren Michael Johnson and Melanie (Jamie) Sands; great-grandchildren Jacob Johnson, Penelope Sands, Scarlett Sands and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Laura (2019); his parents John and Lena; and his brothers Bill and Steve.
Mike was a people person. He loved to meet people and share their stories.
Mike was an avid gardener who loved planting his garden and starting plantings of vegetables and flowers in his greenhouse. Tomatoes were his passion and he was well known as the “Tomato Man”. He loved to share his produce with many friends and family. As soon as the snow melted he loved to go wild mushroom picking.
Mike loved fishing. Every summer he made the trip to Campbell River and Port Hardy to fish for salmon, cod, halibut, crab, or anything else that hit his fishing rod. He was always out to get the ” Big One”. During these trips he made lifetime friends and many lasting memories.
In his younger years, Mike would go out chopping firewood for his wood stove. He could always be found sitting downstairs beside a nice warm fire.
Mike loved hockey. He always had seasons tickets to the local Rockets hockey team. He never missed watching a NHL game on television. After his eyes got dimmer, he would listen to the games on the radio. In fact in his earlier years he played a game or two himself.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Nelson and Lynda who were always there in friendship and caring. Dennis and Donna, you were always within arms reach. A special mention to lifetime family friends Ed and Flo Sosnowski. Throughout his lifetime Mike was blessed to have made so many wonderful friends and so many lasting memories.
The family thanks all the doctors, nurses, (Nurse Sally), and paramedics for caring for him in his final days.
Mike will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of Sts Peter and Paul, in honour of Michael.
