We Remember

KILBACK, Gary Ernest

August 4, 1943 — December 4, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Kilback, who died unexpectedly, surrounded by his children, on December 4, 2024, at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC, at the age of 81.

Gary was born on August 4, 1943, in Creston, BC.  He moved to Cranbrook at a young age, where he spent the rest of his life and put down deep roots in the community.

In his youth, Gary was an accomplished athlete, excelling in baseball, bowling, and hockey. His passion for hockey was evident as he suited up for his hometown Cranbrook Royals Senior team, before an unfortunate ear injury led him to retire from the sport. Despite this setback, Gary remained dedicated to fitness throughout his life, becoming a lifelong bodybuilder and weightlifter.

He was also a big sports fan, cheering on the Cranbrook Bucks and before that, the Kootenay Ice as a long-time season ticket holder. At home, the TV was always tuned to sports, especially Canadiens, Canucks and Blue Jays games. Gary encouraged his children to play sports as well and was always there to coach, watch, and encourage them through the years.

Gary had a long career as a letter carrier in Cranbrook, serving the community for over 35 years. He had a strong work ethic and was dedicated to his job.

An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, always appreciating his time in nature. His favorite camping and fishing spot was Whiteswan Lake, a place where he camped for almost 60 years, and where the family still gathers each year for an annual camping trip. His adventures in the bush with his 4X4 were legendary, particularly amongst his children, to whom he passed on his love for the outdoors.

Gary had a special place in his heart for his dogs, especially his beloved pugs. Their companionship brought him great joy through the latter years of his life.

One of Gary’s greatest attributes was his loyalty and dedication to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by his family and fondly remembered for his passion for sports and the outdoors.

He is survived by his children, Clint (Jennifer) of Kelowna, Cal (Dee) of Cranbrook, Chad (Kim) of Calgary, and Caryn (Matt) of Calgary; grandchildren Alyssa, Cassie, Keian, Dani and Aldous; siblings Wayne Kilback of Nanaimo and Debbie (Nat) Lloyd of Surrey; and his cherished pug Teako.  Gary was predeceased by his parents Ernie and Mary (nee Naso); and his two pugs Chemo and Chen.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
