We Remember

KINAKIN, Helen
July 20, 1935 — June 10, 2025
It is with great love and sadness that we announce the loss of Helen Kinakin, who passed away peacefully at Kelowna Hospice House on June 10, 2025, at the age of 89.
Left to hold her dear to their hearts are her children Tom, Larry (Darlene), Angela (Mike), James (Debby), and Tracey; grandchildren Steven, Allie (Alex), Isaac, Jenaye (Filip), Nik (Jada), Easton, Sam, Megan, Brooke, and Josey; sister Vicky (Harry); and sister-in-law Luba.
She now goes to join those who passed before her, including her beloved husband Allen Kinakin; grandson Scotty; daughter-in-law Ramona; brothers Peter, Fred, John, and Harry; sister Marina; cousin Alice; and parents Anastasia and John Sr.
Helen was born on July 20, 1935, in Grand Forks, BC, one of six children in a busy family. As a young woman, she eventually made her way to Vancouver, where fate stepped in, and she met the love of her life, Allen. The two shared a beautiful bond, one that took them on many adventures, from picking fruit in Kelowna, to a short stint in Calgary that quickly ended when September brought snow. Knowing where their hearts truly belonged, they settled in Kelowna. Allen, a skilled carpenter, helped build the city, starting with their own home, where they raised their children and created a life full of warmth, love, and laughter.
Helen was the heart of the household, a dedicated stay-at-home mom whose hands were always busy with something nourishing, whether kneading dough for bread, simmering borscht, pinching perogies, or preserving her favourite Black Krim tomatoes. She had a green thumb in the garden and a knack for sewing, always creating, always giving. Even as she aged, Helen stayed active, swimming three days a week at the rec. centre until mobility slowed her pace. She also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino, but nothing lit up her spirit more than being with her family. Whether it was the unforgettable trip to Vegas for her and Allen’s 50th anniversary or snorkelling in Hawaii with her children, Helen lived for those moments of connection. She loved deeply, visited often, and gave fully. Her family was her joy, her pride, and her greatest treasure, and they will all miss her beyond words.
Family and friends will each honour Helen in their own ways. No formal service will be held.

I called her Auntie Helen and she was my mom’s cousin and her daughter became one of my best friends. I remember her kitchen always smelling like good Russian Borscht and other excellent smells 👌
