We Remember

KOENIG, Eugene “Gene” Henry

November 13, 1934 — October 7, 2023

Eugene Koenig, born in Bruno, Saskatchewan, embarked on his final voyage on October 7, 2023, in Hospice House, Kelowna, BC. He was cradled in the loving embrace of his beloved wife Diana, with whom he shared 64 cherished years of marriage. By his side was his daughter, Leah, and adored grandson, Baird, a testament to the strong family bonds he nurtured throughout his lifetime. Gene was preceded in passing by his dear son, Kerry.

He hailed from a large and affectionate family. In his final days, his brothers, their spouses, nieces, and nephews were able to say their goodbyes, surrounding him with love and warmth.

Gene’s life was marked by his insatiable wanderlust and intrepid spirit. His service in the Canadian Air Force, his dedicated work with the U.N., and tenure with the Department of External Affairs took him on numerous adventures through Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Among all the awe-inspiring places he visited, the Sinai Desert held a special place in his heart, with its unparalleled beauty leaving an indelible impression on him.

Self-dubbed as a “tinkerer”, Gene’s innate curiosity extended beyond objects to people. This ceaseless wonder not only fuelled his global expeditions but also gave him the courage and vigor to continuously evolve and adapt. Even in his twilight hours, Gene’s spirit remained unbridled, his enthusiasm undimmed, expressing excitement and intrigue about the unknown journey that awaited him next.

To a life well-lived and an explorer at heart, we bid our final farewell, sending Gene off with a heartfelt “bon voyage”. Gene’s legacy of love, adventure, and relentless curiosity will forever resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Central Okanagan Hospice House.
