We Remember

KOVACS, Gabor “Garry”
December 5, 1938 — January 19, 2020
With great sadness, the family of Garry Kovacs announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Garry passed away peacefully at his home in West Kelowna on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Fran; his two sons Randall (Michele) and Kenneth (Alicia); and granddaughter Sarah. He also has one sister, Vera, living in Stockholm, Sweden.
After leaving Hungary in 1956, Garry came to Canada and soon met the love of his life, Fran. He lived his entire adult life in the Kelowna area, raising his family and enjoyed a career as a successful businessman. Garry took amazing photos, was an avid model railroad builder, enjoyed his classic Ford Mustangs and spent time with his dog, Heidi. Garry and Fran also enjoyed numerous vacations to Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada.
The Kovacs family would like to express gratitude and thanks to the following people: Pastor Richard Dumaresq and his wife Shannon; The Truth Now Tabernacle congregation for all the prayers and blessings; Nicole Nadeau of Branching Out Homecare, for her kindness and compassion; Dr. Ryan Bystrom, for his dedication; and the ambulance attendants, paramedics, physiotherapists and other health care providers who assisted with Garry’s care.
He will be missed by all who knew him and said recently that he lived a full life and felt good about his accomplishments. Garry was truly loved and will be in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, February 15th at 11:00 am at the Truth Now Tabernacle, located at 1408 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC. If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Condolences”.

Fran, Randall & Michele, Ken & Alicia…
My sincerest condolences to you on the loss of Garry. I still see him sitting in the office working on orders. Him joking with me about how I got the capsules just perfect when filling them. Many memories of working in the Natural Harvest back in the 90’s, and his mustang sitting outside the store….
Sending you love while you grieve his loss.

Dear Fran, and Kovacs family,
we send our condolances from Hungary.
We’ve known Gábor since Gabor’s father, Béla bácsi lived in Baja (Babits János street 5) in the neighborhood of our beloved, long passed grandparents Jakab János and Jakab Jánosné (Gabi néni).
As a child, me, my sister Judit and our cousins (Zsuzsa, Anna, Edit and Éva) spent half of the summer with our grandparents. Béla bácsi lived there on his own, and had only the quarter of his stomach, received food daily from our grandmother’s kitchen, and we were often permitted to deliver Béla bácsi’s food to the next flat in the building. I admired and liked to visit Béla bácsi, always with joy and curiosity. He was a true, kind old gentleman who always treated us very politely as young ladies (I was 8 years old I suppose).
It was good, that Gabor didn’t sell his fathers flat after his death, and regularly visited Baja with Fran. Gabor was a very kind person, with whom it was always a pleasure to meet in Baja, or later in Budapest. Dear Fran, we enjoyed your visits, and thank You again for always contacting us when you were here. For me it was a special link, always an occasion and way of showing our respect and remember our long passed beloved ones.
Thank you fou your letter, and the pictures. Gabor haven’t change one bit since we last met him, his face is just the same as it is in my memories.
I am deeply moved, and thank you for the opportunity that we can send our condolences.
We wish all the best for your family,
Rita Jakab, on behalf of Jakab and Czugh and Toth families
